Installing Lightread on Crunchbang 11

I'm having some trouble installing Lightread(A pretty great Reeder RSS clone) on my Crunchbang 11.

I tried following this tutorial(using google translate), but either I don't understand what I'm supposed to do, or I'm just doing it incorrectly.

http://www.taringa.net/posts/linux/1517 … heezy.html

I downloaded and extracted the files, opened a terminal in the folder, and typed

dpkg -i *.deb

like it said.
I'm kinda feeling like I was stupid and that I'm supposed to replace the "*" with the name of the packages or something. I honestly have no idea.

Help a noobro out.

No, you were supposed to run that command, but what happened when you did? Here's what happened when I did. Ignoring a bunch of output at the beginning, I got:

That's what you call "dependency hell" -- a giant pile of unresolved dependencies that need to be fixed before you will be able to install this. And even then it's probably not a good idea; it looks like an Ubuntu package and is very likely to break a Debian system. You might want to look elsewhere for a Lightread package for Debian or use a different RSS reader. Or if you're really attached to the reader, use Ubuntu...

Oh, and whatever you do, do not try to install it with the instructions found here. That uses an Ubuntu ppa which is almost guaranteed to break your Debian system.

That site says

Lightread is a totally awesome offline Google Reader. With beautiful design and incredible Ubuntu integration, Lightread is the best RSS reader for Linux.

The relevant part is "incredible Ubuntu integration" -- this does not bode well for easy installation on a Debian system.

Re: Installing Lightread on Crunchbang 11

^This big_smile Not worth it for a rss reader for sure! But there are other readers, I've been using newsbeuter for a couple of weeks and like it a lot once you get it configured with tags and stuff it's pretty efficient. I've also tried Liferea which I thought was good, but slow. But as pidsley showed you, dependencie hell with Lightread.

My son didn't understand the concept of a committed relationship, so I told him it's like making a girl your default browser.

Re: Installing Lightread on Crunchbang 11

I don't recall exactly what happened, although it did return a number of errors, it wasn't nearly as many as that. Thanks for the help though guys, it looks like I'll have to look elsewhere for RSS.

I really liked Lightread, because of the 3 column format and syncing with Google Reader. And the "Reeder for Chrome" I so dearly loved broke with a Chrome/Chromium update.
I tried Liferea, but wasn't satisfied at all with it. I'll give Newsbeuter a look. I just want the 3 column format with Google Reader sync, which for some reason all browser extensions that existed are broken now.
