I have an aging imac that is starting to slow down a little and I have an older Dell Inspiron that was slogging along. I dropped #! on the Dell and though I'm a diehard mac fan, I'm using the Dell quite a bit now just due to the speed. I had used #! a while back on an eeepc and then forgot about it for a few years. Now I'm back and I'm pleasantly surprised with how fast it is. It is the fastest machine I own now, by a long shot.
I just installed last night, overwriting a fedora install, an I've been digging aorund on the forums a little bit and I wanted to shout out to everyone here for being so welcoming and helpful. For the short time I've been here, it looks like a great community.
Now, back to digging through the forums to see if I can figure out why my harddrive is spinning so much.
Thanks again for being so welcoming and being such a great community!

Welcome to CrunchBang, kregerator -- I don't know if there's anything we can do for the iMac (I started on Linux on PowerPC, by the way), but I hope you can get that Inspiron going.
Incidentally, on the PowerPC side of things, Debian of course has a PowerPC version (you can run anything, even your electric toothbrush, on Debian), and I know that Fedora is bringing back a PowerPC version for Fedora 17 that's almost there. Good luck on the iMac side.

hello kregerator welcome to the community.
I have a dell pc, and thanks to crunchbang it is as fast as ever, in my opinion their machines age very well, like a good mac does.
Maybe your hard drive is spinning due to constant indexing of files, have you installed anything like beagle or nepomuk?
Also their maybe errors on the disk, if its old.
You can check for errors with a program called palimpsest, which is not installed by default but its availble in synaptic. Running a self test on the volume will show errors.

Thanks for all the warm welcomes! I think the drive is settling down a little. I'm very happy with the system so far. Now it's on to customization. There are already so many good resources available here. I hope I'm able to contribute over time.
