My only PC right now is this getting old desktop from 2006. intel dual core 2.3 GHz, 512MB RAM, onboard video card only. Basically not a great computer. I was really glad to see how well crunchbang ran on this old thing and now that I installed LXDE it's moving like I had hoped I could get it to. Virtually no lag or freeze up !!!
Everyone out there take care and make the best of your day

^ Great to hear it is working so great on your old desktop.
The only issue I have with LXDE is all the dependencies on gnome it installs.

?
It installs policykit-gnome, which could as well be called policykit-gtk. There's a difference between GTK and Gnome.

Of course there is...
I should have said gnome packages
You must know of a LXDE minimal install I am not aware of.

You have gnome-bluetooth and network-manager-gnome. There's no other GTK based frontend to these programs, so the other choice would be to install KDe frontends. Also, there is lxde-core, which is the minimal version.

Strong opinion. Not that I disagree, but perhaps you'd care to explain a bit more?

I don't know, it's ugly, complicated to use and doesn't have any redeeming features.

I don't have an informed opinion, but your answer is brilliant!

LXDE is not my favorite but when I was using openbox everything was lagging pretty noticably. Music would skip and stuff when I was browsing or just using the file manager lol. Now with LXDE I am experiencing a much higher system performance. So for me I suppose it could be said that it's pretty damn awesome, not piece of shit

That doesn't make any sense. LXDE is built on Openbox (it uses Openbox as its window manager, and just adds a layer of other stuff on top), so there's no way it should be faster than Openbox alone. Did you change broswers, file managers, or music players?
But hey, if it's working for you, go for it...

I had been wondering about that myself. I'm running LXDE using openbox as DM and using the same programs as I had been before with just openbox, but somehow it's running with less glitching and lagging. It really doesn't make any sense when I consider it but well, like you say pidsley, if it's working for me....

apt-get install lxde
dont forget to leave out recomends if you really want cruft-free....
apt-get install lxde --no-install-recommends
or
apt-get install lxde-core --no-install-recommends

I swapped out Openbox for Metacity to get full theming. Openbox is just one of the WM is can use. That being said,,, I don't ues LXDE often.

I think better way is add to /etc/apt/apt.conf:
APT::Install-Recommends "false";
APT::Install-Suggests "false";
APT::AutoRemove::RecommendsImportant "false";

agreed, although I only use APT::Install-Recommends "false";

My reason for disliking it:
It's neither here nor there. LXDE isn't as pleasantly clean as pure openbox and lacks the intuitive integration that makes a whole DE worthwhile.
LEGO won't be ready for the average user until it comes pre-assembled, in a single unified look, and glued together so it doesn't come apart.

That's how I feel about it as-well.
Good explanation IMHO.
The only thing out of LXDE I have a use for is lxapperance.

LXDE is just as ugly as you want 2. After all, it's a choice you have to make yourself. I like it, period

It's a collection of tools wrapped around a window manager and then called a Desktop Environment. I wouldn't use LXDE, because it draggs Openbox down into the Shadows of the Boring Desktop™. It's not a seamless experience, it's a bunch of tools and a WM.
The tools on the other hand are often nice. Since they're made with Openbox in mind, they often come with less dependencies than other similar tools, while having a solit, intuitive GUI (lxappearance for example). The even have their own display manager, LXDM, almost fully replacing GDM2. As long as they're giving love back upstream to Openbox, I embrace LXDE as one of those projects I will never use, but gladly hope they persist a decade.
I'm so meta, even this acronym

Maybe lxde isn't the setup for many people round here, but I think they deserve respect for the work they do. My take on their target is the non-geeky user who doesn't have access to modern hardware. (pcmanfm used to be the default for #! btw)

Hey, I'd forgotten about that. Substitute for Slim?

Did you have compositing enabled in Openbox? Maybe that's what slowed it down.

I think it works pretty well, it's just a little immature compared to other DE. As as side note, you can use other Window Mangers with it. I have used it with Metacity with no problems.
