Lubuntu vs crunchbang linux, differences

Yesterday, I "converted" a colleague from windows xp to linux.

Pc specs; ( 6 year old pc)

AMD-64, 3200+
2.01 GHz, 512 RAM
Nvidia GeForce 6600

I tried lubuntu first, the DVD was spinning constantly and up to a point and eventually the monitor went to power saving. Had to reboot the machine, and try again. The same thing happened again.

Desided to try crunchbang linux next, and the install finished only in a few minutes without a problem. (yeah)

I don't think that my lubuntu cd was bad, since it was brand new burnt.

What went wrong with lubuntu, what is so different that it would not install ?

(don't get me wrong, I though Lubuntu was closer to "win" UI for my user big_smile  )

Re: Lubuntu vs crunchbang linux, differences

Sounds like the Lubuntu CD was bad, even though you just burned it. There are several ways this could happen. Did you check the md5sum of the Lubuntu image after you downloaded it? Did you burn the CD at the slowest speed? What burner software did you use? Have you used the Lubuntu CD successfully on any other machines?

I didn't check the md5sum. Lubuntu loaded into the live cd GUI succesfully. I don't remember the burn speed ;-(.   I used brasero and didn't have any problems. It was the first time I tried this Lubuntu cd.

Perhaps it is nothing more than your colleague's PC being incredibly intelligent... wink

Re: Lubuntu vs crunchbang linux, differences

Has to be the CD, or his optical drive having hickups
I haven't burnt a CD in years, why don't you use the USB way?
It's faster both to create the live medium, and then even more so to actually install it!
Any USB creator will work with buntu : unetbootin ... and of course dd in linux

But yeah, that's only if you really prefer lubuntu for this user, his PC already said what it preferred as mentionned above^^

Even better ? Since you can get #! installed fine, just apt-get install lxde packages on top and you give him the choice of DE at start, depending on his needs, or mood smile
