Hi all! I took a look at Windows 8 and decided I should get ready to transition to Linux.
My goal is to one day put together my own LFS build. But I have a lot to learn before I even start on that. I'll be with CrunchBang until then.
Some of my objectives are: Getting the system ready for gaming, Switching to DWM, Learning to write C++ programs (including games) on Linux, getting the mouse pointer to disappear when I stop moving the mouse <Accomplished with Unclutter!>, writing a custom mouse driver for my laptop's touch-pad, and setting up my own multitouch-pad (diffuse lighting).
I look forward to joining the Linux community. I hope I can repay your hospitality after I get past the noob faze.

Hi Chris740,
what kind of games do you intend to play on linux ?
and Welcome on board!

Thanks for your interest.
I've been using steam on Windows. But I'll probably go back to Windows when I want to use that. On Linux I'm actually more interested in developing games than playing them. But if you have any recommendations I'll check them out. It'd be nice if I could play Vindictus on Linux. I'm also looking into HTML5. If I started writing games I'd start with HTML5, then do a native Linux expansion, then port to Windows.
If you have any tips on improving graphics performance I'd love to hear them.
I still have a copy of Windows on my hard-drive. I would be interested to know if it's possible to run DirectX from that on Linux. From what I've seen WINE just isn't good enough to run Crysis (correct me if I'm wrong).

I recommend LFS as a learning tool. Taught me a lot about the workings of linux.
Steam is also coming to linux sometime soon, iirc. Google it.
Anyhoo. welcome to the forums.

The best fancy-state-of-the-art native linux game is IMHO Heroes Of Newerth - even if I don't like the genre (tug of war, dota).
It's not so noob-friendly though. You have to be good at it.
But It's free to play.
For shooters I recommend Warsow, even more hardcore. It has a special movement system which makes it reeaallly challenging. It's open source if you want to have a look.
As you can see I'm more interested in competetive than in casual gaming. What kind of games do you intend to make ?
(Could it please be a native linux RTS, comparable or better than Starcraft II. Need it till the end of next month. thx)

I was a martial arts instructor. I've always been interested in computers. But thus far I've only done some programming as a hobby (some Assembly in DOS as a teenager, it was obsolete even then). My school closed a while back, so I'm looking to transition into development. I have some conceptual knowledge (enough to follow GEB), but I certainly am not proficient at Linux.
