Been using Claws ever since I started using #!, and I'm quite fond of it.
The latest release of #! comes with Claws version 3.5.0 ; but as of this writing, Claws is up to 3.7.1
At the Claws site, there is a warning of sorts regarding the upgrade process:
http://www.claws-mail.org/faq/index.php … ware_of.3F
However, the release notes don't seem to have much by way of upgrade caveats.
Have any other #!-ers done an upgrade of the Claws install that comes with #! ?
Thanks.

I have upgraded on one of my systems to 3.6.1, the version currently shipping with Jaunty Jackalope. It is not quite 3.7.1, but it is an upgrade and it worked without issue. I guess as long as you make a backup of your ~/.claws-mail folder you should be safe to try an upgrade. If you do decide to perform an upgrade, please let us know how you get on.

Me too, it is an excellent email client!

I've upgraded to the latest claws on all my systems with no problems at all.

If you want the latest version, you can use this PPA:

Thanks all for the feedback. I will give it a shot, and let you all know how it goes.

anonymous,
thanks very much for the tip, regarding the PPA. Using that link I was able to easily find instructions on getting configured for a smooth upgrade.
indeed, the upgrade to 3.7.1 was quite easy and painless. the newly-upgraded client is working well so far. responsiveness seems to be quite snappy, so far.
however, one caveat: the listing of accounts and folders on the left, as well as the list of messages on the right, appears to be "ghosted" i.e. the color of the font, in both pane-sets, is very faint.
I've gone through the Preferences sets, and have yet to find a parameter group which would affect this.
but, in any case.... like I said, it's So Far, So Good.

Looks like I spoke too soon....
Since upgrading to 3.7.1, I've had an intermittent problem fetching from one of my remote accounts/mailboxes. I've got two accounts setup, both IMAP. One of them is only being updated intermittently. I'll do a fetch, and a bunch of new messages will come down. Then a little while later, I'll use another account to send a message to this problem account, and confirm via webmail to the problem account that the message has arrived. But then I try to get new messages for the problem account and the new message does not come down. The 'Network Log' does show activity during this Get, i.e., it does not appear to be a problem where Claws is not actually attempting anything.
After the first time this happened, a restart of Claws 'fixed' it, i.e. I was able to fetch the messages that had remained on the server. This only worked once. Last night I tried all sorts of things to get new messages down, without success. Then today I fire up Claws mail and a ton of new messages come down (but then I have the problem with the One New Message, described above)
I'll continue to look for a solution and will post again here when I've found one, but in the meantime, I hope this information is helpful for others looking to update their Claws-mail.

I'm not making any progress getting these issues resolved, so I'm thinking about 'downgrading' to claws-mail 3.5, or 3.6.1 .
I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to software installation on Linux ; I'm used to running 'apt-get install whatIwant' , and using 'make' etc. on a tarball of source, but not much beyond that.
I've not been able to find either binaries or source for 3.6.1 on intrepid. Can I / should I go ahead and download the source for 3.6.1 on Jaunty, found at the link below?

... or should I just download the 3.6.1 binaries that were compiled for Jaunty, from Launchpad? (i.e. should I expect they would work OK in Intrepid / Crunchbang?

They probably would, however it is only 20 days until they move from beta to final Jaunty. If you can manage to deal with the issue for 20 days I would hold off then upgrade your system.
I view KDE like I view snow. It looks fun and marvelous, it's fun to play in, but after a while I just want someone to take it all away.

Still having problems...
- I removed the 3.7.1 install (keeping my ~./claws-mail folder intact), downloaded and installed (via dpkg) the 3.6.1 binaries, without incident. Fired up claws-mail, saw my accounts and messages; had same exact results. First account/mailbox is fine; second one having the same issue as described above. (Also, still having the "text of all non-selected items in both the Folder View pane and Message List panes are greyed out" issue, which was not present with the original 3.5 client.)
- Then uninstalled 3.6.1, moved my ~./claws-mail folder elsewhere, and did a fresh install of 3.7.1 (via apt) and started completely fresh - set up my account (IMAP) again, etc. The first fetch worked - downloaded all my messages; but then I was back to being unable to fetch any new messages, as described above.
- After gluing the hair back to my head, and waiting a day, I went to my other computer, also running Crunchbang, and installed 3.7.1 via apt. Set it up for the same account. And.... same problem(s) are happening.
At this point I can think of only a couple possible reasons for this:
1. There is a fundamental incompatibility between #! and claws-mail. This seems extremely unlikely. However I can imagine that this might have something to do with the ghosted-text issue. I've tried changing every font-, color-, or display-related setting in Claws, to no avail. So I'm wondering if some system setting or Appearance configuration might be affecting this aspect of Claws.
2. The problem has something to do with the IMAP server that this account profile is set up for. Well it just so happens that it's an Exchange 2007 server. I'd be surprised if the cause of my problems is, say, something about the server's IMAP configuration, because my company has a lot of other people using non-Windows mails clients to access their mail. A couple of them are hardcore anti-Microsofties, with a lot of pull internally, so if there were any misconfiguration issues I think they would have been addressed. That being said, I wonder if there's an incompatibility between Claws-mail, and MS's probably-not-100%-standards-compliant IMAP implementation.
I'm leaning in the direction of #2. The other IMAP account I've had set up in my various claws-mail installations, does not connect to an MS Exchange server, and I've had no problems with it.

He people,
The PPA repositories link doesn't really work for me. The package manager returns:
Duplicate sources.list entry http://ppa.launchpad.net jaunty/main Packages (/var/lib/apt/lists/ppa.launchpad.net_claws-mail_ppa_ubuntu_dists_jaunty_main_binary-amd64_Packages)Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/claws-mail/ppa … ty/Release Unable to find expected entry deb-src/binary-amd64/Packages in Meta-index file (malformed Release file?)
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
Does this mean this repository has no amd64 version?

Mmm. this sounds serious. I have upgraded today with the ppa link to 3.7.1 and it works fine.
I explicitly checked all my accounts and they are sending/recieving ok.
The only problem I have is with the ghosted text areas (see screenshot)

The text might just be because of the CrunchBang GTK theme.
Openbox menu > Preferences > User Interface Settings > pick a different theme.

I can confirm this, it is the theme. While the theme worked quite well with Claws Mail 3.5, it broke when Claws moved to 3.6; there must have been a change to the GTK+ widget used? I am pretty sure I applied a fix for the 9.04.xx dark theme release, but it may only work with the version of Murrine which ships with 9.04.xx, at least I have not tested it with the version packaged for 8.10.xx.
The themes package can be found at: http://crunchbang.net/packages-9.04.xx/ … .1_all.deb

Slightly off-topic, I also use Claws Mail in #! 9.04, but I'm having a problem with making Local Folders to store mail with. My mail is on an IMAP server, so I created an IMAP account in Claws. The only way I could figure out how to create a folder for mail storage is within the account, but then it is stored on the IMAP server rather than my computer. All other mail programs I have used (e.g., Evolution, Entourage on the Mac, Mail on the Mac), automatically set up a local account and folders; can this not be done manually in Claws Mail?
