[SOLVED]From Stable -> Unstable

Hello , i am using #! for over 4 days, i am perfectly OK with it. The only one problem is that my notebooks fan is still running even when i am doing practically nothing. I was searching in forums and i saw that this can be made by rendering the desktop and can be removed by installing proprietary drivers , so i need to istall ATI drivers for my notebook but i read that i need kerner 2.6.39+ so i need unstable version of #! i am currently on stable Statler ,

so my question is what to do, or how to edit sources to be able upgrade all that ustable stuff... thx

Martin

Re: [SOLVED]From Stable -> Unstable

Backports.  You seek backports!
/Yoda

Also, don't forget that, after you get the backported kernel. you also need the appropriate headers for that kernel.

Re: [SOLVED]From Stable -> Unstable

Do you have backports in your sources list?

cat /etc/apt/sources.list

If you want a newer kernel, you can grab the latest 3.2 from backports.

To add backports manually:

sudo <your editor> /etc/apt/sources.list

Add this line:

deb http://backports.debian.org/debian-backports squeeze-backports main contrib non-free

Then:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Also, be aware of this if you do not want automatic upgrades from backports:

Re: [SOLVED]From Stable -> Unstable

I noticed my laptop running warmer too. After installing the proprietary ATI drivers it got a little bit better, but not a whole lot. After much mucking about I finally discovered that turning the backlight down actually dropped the temp and noticeably quieted the fan. Running the proprietary drivers resulted in a very bright display, too bright for my taste, and I was able to drop the backlight all the way down to 55% and still be happy. Once I was content with the way it looked I apt-get installed xbacklight and added "xbacklight -set 55 &" to autostart, now this thing runs as cool as it does with Win7.

YMMV

Re: [SOLVED]From Stable -> Unstable

So... i recently installed AMD proprietary drivers for my Mobility Radeon HD 5145. And its really better...

With default drivers i was about 59/60 C when doing nothing... and with 60% backlight intensity... now its about 52/3 C and with 100% backlight.., fan is not working always like before..

And now i dropped bl to 50% and activated power save mode and it look great its about 50/51 C and fan is not hearing anymore....

Re: [SOLVED]From Stable -> Unstable

How do you do the opposite of this?  I mean, i have installed the BPO version of crunchbang statler, and i want to go back to the kernel 2.6 because i have trouble with my Realtek 8188CE Wifi. So, how do i switch to stable?

Re: [SOLVED]From Stable -> Unstable

You mean you just want to switch to the older kernel?
Just choose it from the Grub menu after rebooting if the kernel is still available, if not, install it.

Downgrading is not supported or at least a bit complicated. I would say, open a new thread to solve your Realtek problem first. Normally you just need to install the Realtek driver for your hardware. It is in the repos.

firmware-realtek

from the backports.

Re: [SOLVED]From Stable -> Unstable

Well i did install firmware-realtek. Now the problem is solved. But somehow i experienced with previous OSs that Kernel 2.6 (stable) works better and heats my laptop less.  But when i installed kernel 2.6.32 and booted from it, i could no longer see a wireless device detected. So should i install firmware-realtek again? I'm afraid to do that becouse i'm worried i'll mess things up.

Feel free to ask me for any logs.

Re: [SOLVED]From Stable -> Unstable

Now I really suggest to open your own thread on this to get better help. This thread is already marked as solved. wink

The newer kernels indeed have some reported power regressions. But we have some workarounds.
So we need your hardware specs etc. We'll help you out but please go to the appropriate section, more people can then chime in.
