Many of the #! crowd, probably already heard of htop, back when jebus was in diapers. This is for all us newbs who haven't. htop is an app like normal top, shows you the top processes running on your OS, how much RAM and CPU is in use and some other good stuff. But it's got a much more appealing and easier to interpret layout. Give it a try if ya like, had seen and heard of it before, but never sank in until now.
Install w synaptic or in terminal w ....
sudo apt-get install htopLaunch it in terminal by typing "htop" of course. Then press the q key to close it when you're done, admiring the kewlness of it all, or x out of terminal etc etc. blahblah. Apologize if this has been mentioned to death. Only thought it neat and worth bringing to front of mind I guess for some of us.

^ Nice tip machine, thanks ...
Had seen you post screenies of htop before. Must've sailed right over my head at the time. Doing some research into nginx and a person in a good resource mentioned it and posted a screenshot. Thought htop, where have ye been all my life, and so this thread.

^Thanks Vast 2nd that. Lol .... folks like machine and yourself, htop probably taken for granted by now. Discovered longggg ago. Newbish nix folks like myself, we get mezmerized by such. Or at least .... think it's a well laid out and useful thing. Yowza ... been reading too long atm, brain feels like lumpy oatmeal though. So flashy or shiny objects are dang near hypnotic right now.

Agree@Vasty: I think - or I am sure - it was default in Ubuntu #! those days. There was even an openbox menu entry for it

I've always used htop but you gotta respect top just 'cause it's almost thirty years old now. If you ever get stuck managing an NFS share on an old System V or IRIX machine or something, you know it will be there

'nmon' is nice as well.

Just tried top, htop and nmon.
Gotta say that htop is my favourite
I agree that it should come as standard.

Generally though, if I'm using a machine with a GUI, I use this app called "conky."

But then you can't search the processes, and kill with F9 if necessary. I run htop in a terminal that starts from autostart, and reduced the number processes that I had displayed in conky

Actually did an about face on this since dorking around more w htop, not that there's a thing wrong with. Only find myself using plain ole top more often. No worries ... somebody can always use them both w/o probs.

Hmmm ... reminds me, probably about time I do change my socks. Both are good/useful imo though. That's definitley summin #! or gnu/nix isn't lacking, choices of apps/utils.
