Re: What Windows features do you miss most in Linux?

A defragmentation utilty big_smile

No, seriously, there are 2 things that get on my nerves in Linux:
- video and audio chat work much better in XP and (at least for my lousy webcam) the video quality is higher.
- my Canon/Lexmark printers don't work well with CUPS. So, that's what I'm really missing, and that's why I still have XP on the other drive.

I don't know if we can call this 'Windows features' or simply 'lack of support in Linux' smile

Of course there is a bunch of software available for Windows only - my better half misses something like Solidworks.

Re: What Windows features do you miss most in Linux?

Not a single one. I especially don't miss Windows pretending to install the "drivers" for a bog standard USB mouse and requiring to be rebooted when it finds the "drivers" after every Patch Tuesday. I also don't miss the million GB compatibility folder or proprietary applications not working on 64 bit.

NOTHING!

@MachineBacon , I'm pretty sure there are available drivers for about every printer. I have several printers installed. Some took quite some time to configure and get working. My video also works plenty smooth. My wife uses..gasp..Skype every day.

Re: What Windows features do you miss most in Linux?

I honestly can't think of one either. Support for games I don't really see as a feature of the windows environment. The way I look at it, running games through wine is a bonus to Linux, after all windows can't run linux apps.

Re: What Windows features do you miss most in Linux?

I miss being able to watch 1080p movies in vlc without tearing. Mplayer with CUDA works well but it has some quirks. There's some other nice media players and codecs and such in Windows, like cccp, media player classic, core AVC. As MachinBacon pointed out, there's a ton of CAD programs like solidworks, 3d rendering and graphic design utilities, and DAWs that still flat out annihilate their FOSS counterparts to the point where it's not even a matter of taste, you're just using an inferior program because you don't want to pay money to some evil greedy boogey man (or in my case, I just quit almost all of my hobbies that require some kind of M$ install). I'll be a lot more satisfied with my Linux machine if that bitwig DAW ever comes out. And I do use Windows machines on a regular basis, and am pretty decent at managing AD domains and fixing random windows bugs even if it takes some registry editing or something, so it's hard to say I "miss" these programs, since....I could just boot up one of my other partitions and run them if I wanted. Overall, the list of things I wish were on Linux is fairly short compared to the list of programs I use in Linux that I thirst for every time I'm stuck on a Windows box at school. Maybe if Windows 8 finally implements some decent tab completion in the command line I might stop crying on the inside every time I have to use a Windows machine for something.

You see, the point is that Skype works well, but damned jabber/ekiga/pidgin/gajim or whatever they are called produce pixeled garbage for the "0c45:613b Microdia Win2 PC Camera" in Linux, but not in Windows.
What I mean is that the same hardware, on the same computer, in another OS produces a better output. No matter how much I configure smile The difference is like day and night.

As for the printers, the Canon Pixma colour printer only printed black & white, but the HP can print black and grey lines, alternating. I don't bash Linux at all, by the way: both printers are specially issued for the Chinese market, I couldn't even find any info about the hardware "under the hood". Google only directs me to Chinese and Malaysian pages, the model is not listed at OpenPrinting, so finding a suitable printer driver in Linux was hit & miss. More miss.

Of course it has changed and it got much better recently than 5-6 years ago, still, I somehow miss the plug&play feeling for "cheap" hardware.

In Linux I miss Windows-style self-contained one-directory applications. It can be done, but it's convoluted.

Sounds like you need to write a linux driver for those printers. smile
I have 3 HP and have used Lexmark C540n with no issues to any of them.

^ Now that i think about it: a Hardware compatibility list would be something to include in the Wiki.

Thanks for the reply, p120d16y.

Re: What Windows features do you miss most in Linux?

I miss the feature where management agrees on implementing a linux-only environment with web-based apps in an enterprise... *sigh* Nop, let's pay for the client OS, the server OS, a virtualization layer by a third party (I'm looking at your expensive face Citrix!), the database it uses and the sole office suite on the face of the earth. Because yeah, if it doesn't say ".xlsx" it's not a spreadsheet! And if it's free, it HAS to be rubbish tongue

Oh, and public acceptance. Lot of people find Linux/FOSS still a stick in the mud, simply because they don't understand what it does or means, even for them on their paid for workstation...

All kidding aside, the one thing I do miss is a proper Visio-equivalent. I know there's yEd, which I find to be better at most points, but still... The people I work with double-click the file I made, which then opens in IE/FF, because it's made from XML, go figure...

Use what you like. If you don't like it, improve it. If you can't, look for something else.
