Moving my conky weather scripts to #! forums

Hello there; first post in these forums...
My name is TeoBigusGeekus. I am an Arch Linux user after I've switched from Ubuntu a couple of years ago.
My main linux internet activity has been in the Ubuntuforums, where I've created and maintained the following thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1156383.
Recently, I've decided to abandon UF for personal reasons (see here and here for details) and move my scripts to the Arch Linux forums.
The latter decision proved to be disastrous: the Arch Forums admins couldn't cope with the influx of Ubuntu users and decided to Dustbin my new thread.
A good friend of mine, Sector11, had proposed me once to bring the script in the #! forums, as you people here are more elastic with people asking naive questions and not using #!.

I'm asking permission to move my scripts here.
If the answer is positive, I'd like to ask for a proposal about where to place the thread (Tips, tricks & scripts?).
Also, do you have a forums policy about images?

Thanks in advance and I hope that this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship...

Re: Moving my conky weather scripts to #! forums

Welcome to the #! forums!

Seems @S11 is everywhere. smile
I am not a mod but I would indeed post your scipts in the Tips & Tricks section, though we have a big conky thread but your scripts are specific. Also, many #!'ers are conky addicted anyway and maybe already use some of your scripts and will of course appreciate more about it.

A policy, what's that? smile Here is the way how to post images from the monthly screenshot thread:

Please continue to use thumbnails (please try to avoid the large thumbnail imgur.com code) linking to the larger image to help those of us with slow connections. An example of the code needed is below. Most image hosting sites will automatically generate this for you as well. I've been using postimage.org lately which does a nice job.

If not, it'd mean almost half of our regular users won't be welcome here, including myself. tongue

No, I don't think it'd be an issue, as long as people stay polite and follow the rules.

Teo, I hope you understand how important this is. We welcome newcomers and don't have a heavily moderated forum (like Arch) because we have not needed heavy moderation. There have been a very few times when threads get out of hand and the mods step in quickly, but mostly we are capable of moderating ourselves. Maybe you should hang out with us for a little while and see how things work here before you invite a bunch of people who may not understand...

(edit) it looks to me like at least one person was not capable of following the Arch rules and was not polite... hmm

Re: Moving my conky weather scripts to #! forums

I have known Teo for several years and know how fair he is in his help and posts regarding his scripts.

I also know the reasons for the rudeness that happened over at Orange and know that Teo had nothing to do with it.

We welcome you to CrunchBang Teo, your scripts, friendliness and professionalism is well regarded and appreciated.

Should there be any issues, there are several mods who will handle them quickly, myself included

Posting them in Tips, Tricks & Scripts is the best place.

If you need anything feel free to PM me.

I can fully understand your concerns; although I can guarantee for my behaviour, I can't say the same for potential users coming, mainly from the Ubuntu forums.
Anyway, I just post the thread here and see how it goes; thanks all for the answers.

Re: Moving my conky weather scripts to #! forums

well Mr Teo, seems i completely missed this thread. which is kinda strange, since i've been wasting my time hanging out on these forums these past two days. oh well.

anyway, just wanted to welcome you to the community. i see you already know some of the guys here, and though their kind words about you are not truly required for anyone to be able to join our community, they sure are nice to read and make me look forward to your future contributions here.

as mentioned before, feel free to migrate your conky weather scripts to our forums. the best thing would be to just make your own thread for them. i think that, aside from the big-ass conky thread we have, this is currently the only dedicated conky weather thread we have. it focuses on LUA, so don't know whether you're using that too, but i think it might be good to do some linkage to link the two together at least, so anybody looking for conky weather can find out they have 2 options. i'm sure VastOne will add your stuff to the Quick Reference as well, and if he puts it right below Peachy's conky weather-stuff, i think we're as optimized as can be smile

so much for the serious stuff! now let's get back to having fun big_smile

Re: Moving my conky weather scripts to #! forums

Welcome Teo.

You've got more politeness, tact and diplomacy in you than a LOT of other people, me included.  I've been know to put my size 9½ foot in my size 8 mouth --- and make it fit!  I've never seen that with you.  I think you'll do just fine here.

I honestly can't believe that someone suggested "PKGBUILD". Your scripts are bash scripts and therefore *nix compatible - to get weather in conky.  Not programs that need to be 'built' with any of the Linux package formats

The latter decision proved to be disastrous {snip} and decided to Dustbin my new thread.

So sad.  sad

Welcome to #! Teo.  Like I said, there are people here that use a lot of different distros.

I bid you welcome and much success with your scripts!
Now I have some wotk to do.  big_smile

Also, since we've bullied all the Arch users into recognizing the overwhelming superiority of Debian (well, except Awebb), we'll surely be able to cope with a few Ubuntu newcomers.

I saw what happens in Orange and in Blue. I for one decided to live, give support and get help only here as a Debian user.
