Good evening,
First post (heh)! I'm kinda new regarding Linux, but have worked with Ubuntu for some time now. Now, for my question:
Today I've bought a new netbook: an Asus X101CH. It comes with Windows 7 Starter (ugh.) installed, so I did some partition magic and installed Crunchbang (stable).
Everything went fine except for the fact that the screen is stuck at 800x600. The netbook supports 1024x700 (I believe), but I can't select that mode from granr, only 800x600 0.0Hz. It's all stretched and looks horrible
lspci gives this:
VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Cedarview Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
I've searched around somewhat and found these related threads:
http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … tom-n2600/ - will the backport fix my problem, or is it possible to upgrade the kernel without fully re-installing crunchbang?
http://crunchbanglinux.org/wiki/asus_ee … in_800x600 - but these didn't work, or I couldn't get them to work.
Can anybody tell me what the easiest way is to fix this problem? It's a fresh install, so a re-install won't be that big a deal - as long as I can get the right resolution for my display.
Thanks in advance,
Niels

Welcome to the forum Niels!
As I mentioned in the other thread, it appears that Debian Squeeze (released Feb. 2011) does not have great support for Cedarview (released Nov. 2011).
If you are feeling brave, you can try installing 3.3 kernel from the Experimental repo following this apt-pinning guide: http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … edge-with/
Unfortunately (for you; fortunate for me
) my Asus has a different, supported graphics chip, so my suggestion is kind of a shot in the dark.

Hmm, I followed the post, but got some errors trying to install the new kernel. Just tried it with the backport, and that works! uname -r:
3.3.0-rc6-686-pae
However, I still can't select another screen reslolution - xrandr:
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 800 x 600, current 800 x 600, maximum 800 x 600
default connected 800x600+0+0 0mm x 0mm

You are not using the Intel video driver, instead you are dropped into VESA.
According to this report, http://www.h-online.com/open/features/K … 65292.html, support needs to be activated by adding kernel parameters i915.i915_enable_rc6=1
Let me know if you need help activating.
BTW: Please replace [ comment ] brackets by [ code ] brackets. It makes browsing the thread easier.

bootinfoscript - emacs primer - I ♥ #!

I added the line in GRUB (/etc/default/grub), ran update-grub, rebooted - but still nothing. Xorg.0.log still loads the VESA driver (or at least, that was what I could figure out from the file - line 127?)
Did I do it right, or are there additional steps?
Thanks.
(also edited prev. post, comment is now code!)

That is the correct method, yes.
Check /var/log/Xorg.0.log, line 7 or there around is the boot command line. Verify that it contains i915.i915_enable_rc6=1

It does:

Where did you install linux-image-3.3.0 from?

I'm not sure what you mean, I did this:
installed the backport #!, then followed the apt pinning guide snowpine linked. After that I ran
apt-get install linux-image-3.3.0-rc6-686-paeand then (I believe) ran
apt-get upgradeLast edited by TG (2012-03-28 18:30:58)

Would you mind posting the last lines from

Not at all - here it is: http://crunchbanglinux.org/pastebin/1554
The last 2 commands are indeed the install and upgrade.

I installed the linux-image-3.3.0-rc6-686-pae package myself, and I am afraid that the [8086:0be1] device is not (yet) supported by this kernel.

Drats.
Is there perhaps a way to 'fake' the screen size with a pillarbox or something for now? The stretching is perhaps worse than the low res.
Also, is there an easy way for me to check when the device is/will be supported?
Thanks again!

Hi
I had the same probleme. You should have a look here http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=78157. In a few words: rebuilding the entire kernel with Intel GMA600 support (Experimental) and Intel GMA3600/3650 support (Experimental) options.
Works for me!
My resolution is now 1024x600. It makes the difference!!
But it comes with some other issues. Stanby crash, and i can't make external monitor working. Don't now if someone can help with that.
An other idear might be http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php? … 3&start=15. It seems that there is some cedraview drivers for ubuntu. But i d'ont how to process to install them on my #!
I hope you will understand my poor english..
