Just installed CrunchBang on an new ASUS X53E notebook.
When the headphones are plugged into the headphone port, I can hear all the sound.
With the headphones unplugged, there is no sound from the speakers.
Shutdown the system and removed the headphones . Boot up and still no sound from the speakers.
Plug in the headphones and there is the sound again.

How do you get the sound from these builtin Altec Lansing speakers?

Run alsamixer from terminal and make sure that every thing has volume up
Press F6 and select your card .. Make sure PCM is volumed up

I just started having this problem, too. Volume with and without headphones has been fine until a few days ago. Then, I would get volume through the speakers, plug in headphones and get volume, but then if I unplugged the headphones I would get nothing out of the speakers until a restart. Now I only get volume through the headphones period. Tried the above and nothing.

I ain't no expert, but what's 3D Contr? You have three of them and it looks like the third one is muted.

Also, in case anyone has not seen this, there are more options to the right.. get there by arrowing over..
This is sounding more like a kernel issue.. have either of you recently upgraded your kernel?

I did just do an update (I'm using 2.6.39-bpo.2-486). I added some dmesg info to my first post, too. I arrowed over and turned up everything and still nothing. I was wondering what the 3d stuff is?

How do you mark the thread 'Solved' ?
Pardon my ignorance.

Edit the first post and append [solved] to the subject.
while ( ! ( succeed = try() ) );

Bampin' so I don't have to make a new thread. His issue was solved by enabling the sound card, but my card is enabled. What is this 3D I see in AlsaMixer?
