[fixed] Cruncheee wifi driver crapping out

This happends to me every single day and it's driving me insane. Using Cruncheee on my Asus Eee  904HD.

My wifi works as expected for about 20 minutes and then decides to stop working. Sometimes disabling networking, re-enabling, and then waiting 5 minutes does the trick. Or resetting. I'd rather not have to reset my laptop every 20 minutes, though!

Here are a few outputs of dmesg | tail that are produced after my wifi craps out:

~/ dmesg | tail

(I searched to see if someone had made a post about this before and didn't find one, so sorry if this is a common problem!)

Re: [fixed] Cruncheee wifi driver crapping out

I'm in the process of writing a network manager that will detech when wifi starts to crap out and reload the module. I posted a (now very out of date and primitive) version earlier on the forum (if you are interested let me know an I can post the current, much improved, version). It isn't really a great fix, because things have to get bad before it tries to reload it, and then you lose networking for a couple secs while it actually reloads it and reconnects, but it is better than having to stop what you are doing and manually bring it down.

I sent you a PM, wmdiem

walicard, if I find a good solution to this  problem I'll let you know. Not having internet access 25% of the time is not exactly a good situation.

Hey everyone,

Sorry for the late response. My problems have been completely resolved by switching to the wicd network manager + updating the to newer kernel in the #! repo in Synaptic.

Hey, could you tell me how you did that? I'm still pretty new to linux in general, and I have the same problem you did, with wi-fi coming and going randomly.

I don't know what network manager I have now on my Eee (I'm running CrunchEee on it), and I guess I must uninstall that before I install a new one. I do system upgrades pretty often, but I don't know if that updates the kernel.

To install wicd (providing you have internet access) open a terminal & type "sudo apt-get install wicd" (without quotes), then "sudo apt-get remove gnome-network-manager" - unless you use Synaptic.  Alternatively, with no internet access on your machine.  Find another machine with internet access & download the latest (stable) wicd .deb file to a pendrive.  Copy it to your machine & double-click it - your packet-manager will install it (providing dependencies are resolved).

Your autostart.sh will have the gnome-network-manager start at startup. Simply # out that line - or delete it.

Wicd manager will run in the background, when you're ready to configure your wireless hit alt+F2 and type "wicd-client" (without quotes). Its icon will appear @ bottom right. Right-click on it to start configuration.

Hope this lot helps.

Edit: I'm fairly sure that system updates DON'T update the kernel.  Off the top of my head I can't remember the command.  You could hit the search button above - someone's bound to have written about kernel-updates.

Re: [fixed] Cruncheee wifi driver crapping out

Turns out my internet connection is just as unstable with wicd as it was with nm. Could you recommend any others I should try? I never had this problem running Xandros or Eeebuntu.
