[SOLVED] Compositing and Conky wierdness

I have a strange problem with my Conky... and only in Conky

When there is a refresh of the Conky,  it comes back with a visible black background instead of the transparency.  Using Xfce, I right click and click Settings and then Settings Manager and the issue goes away, the transparency comes back

I have done the following...

Upgraded to Xfce 4.8.0.2

Switched to Cairo Compositing

Gone through every setting in both compositors and have not found a solution...

I have switched from

own_window_type override

to

own_window_type normal

and back

I have turned on and off and back on the

Skip Windows that have skip pager or skip taskbar properties set (which I do have in my Conky)

And none of the above helps...

I also use GMusicBrowser which has a cover option on the desktop that uses the compositor the same way as Conky but this is not affected...

Anyone seen this?

Thanks

Re: [SOLVED] Compositing and Conky wierdness

I've got a an alpha transpanancy setup and compositing enabled in XFCE and conky works well. THere was a black box when I edit .conkyrc and conky refreshed the setup but the info refresh is fine. My .conkyrc has:

own_window yes
own_window_transparent no
own_window_argb_visual yes
own_window_argb_value 200
own_window_type desktop
own_window_hints undecorated,below,sticky,skip_taskbar,skip_pager

for the windows settings.

I added or replaced these

own_window_argb_visual yes
own_window_argb_value 200
own_window_hints undecorated,below,sticky,skip_taskbar,skip_pager
own_window_type desktop

and it seems to be resolved...

Thank you!  I appreciate it...

Re: [SOLVED] Compositing and Conky wierdness

own_window_argb_visual yes

That solved it for me but I have:

# Create own window instead of using desktop (required in nautilus)
own_window yes
own_window_argb_visual yes
own_window_type desktop
own_window_transparent yes
own_window_hints undecorated,below,sticky,skip_taskbar,skip_pager

There's a reason you separate military and the police. One fights the enemies of the state, the other serves and protects the people. When the military becomes both, then the enemies of the state tend to become the people.

Great! FWIW, you can adjust the level of transparency you want in the range from 0-255 on the line:

own_window_argb_value 200

That is great...

But..

I think the real value that solved it is this one...

own_window_argb_visual yes

and leaving this one...

own_window_transparent yes

I wanted to get to the root of the issue, so I went back and added each argument line by line and that is what solved it for me...

Just wanted to add this in case anyone else needs the info...

Thanks again..!

Re: [SOLVED] Compositing and Conky wierdness

By the way, since this will show up in a similar search of the forums; running with Openbox I had the same problem when the background wasn't being drawn on the root window (i.e. Plasma-Desktop rather than feh or nitrogen) and my solution was similar

own_window yes
own_window_transparent yes
own_window_type normal
own_window_argb_visual yes
own_window_class conky-semi
own_window_hints undecorated,below,sticky,skip_taskbar,skip_pager

This is what the arch wiki tells you to do for KDE4, but I figure it is worth mentioning here if anyone is having trouble with transparency still, google gives you links to a whole bunch of scripts using feh, but they are pretty KDE specific (I am sure more programs than plasma draw backgrounds in odd ways) and this solution works with the version of conky that comes with statler.
