So one day, for some reason I don't remember, I tried to remove the package adobe-flashplugin. However, there were some nasty errors which caused dpkg hell. I gave up for the time being. Then, a few days ago, I needed to do the same thing again because I wanted to use flashplugin-nonfree instead, and I don't see the point of having more than one installed at the same time. However, it again gave me some errors with update-alternatives. No matter what I tried to do, like force it or reinstall it, it failed epically. Then, I figured it out. Here are the steps.
1) Install an alternate flash plugin, like gnash or flashplugin-nonfree
2) This is the crucial step! If you did not see lines like
update-alternatives blah...blahwhen installing the package, you will need to do this. Run
update-alternatives --install /usr/lib/[browser]/plugins/flashplugin-alternative.so [browser]-flashplugin /path/to/new/flash/plugin 10replacing [browser] with iceape, iceweasel, mozilla, firefox, xulrunner, midbrowser, and xulrunner-addons.
3) You should now be able to uninstall adobe-flashplugin normally!

I tried to remove it a while ago, and found that this link: http://blog.ixti.ru/archives/6
And as it says there "The problem is that this package was built ONLY for Ubuntu.", so when you ask for it to be removed it first tries to do things that is only possible to do in Ubuntu. So an alternative to chaanakya's guide (which I have not tried) would be the in the link I provided.
I hope they will fix this issue.

I actually tried that, but it didn't work (for me) - Anonymous posted the same thing when I asked for help.

# mv /var/lib/dpkg/info/adobe-flashplugin.prerm /var/lib/dpkg/info/adobe-flashplugin.prerm-DISABLEDThis was enough to make it work for me. It's from the bottom of the blog Jojan links to.

What about non Mozilla browsers like Chrome or Chromium? I'm concerned since I use Chromium as my only and default web browser.
(BTW I also posted this query on the other parallel post. I hope this is not a problem but for enrichment purposes)
Thanks for your help!

I'm not exactly sure how Chromium/Chrome determines the default flashplugin, but if you don't have those programs installed, you should be fine regarding removing adobe-flashplugin.
