NVIDIA Drivers - Envy or other way?

I have a question regardng graphics card driver installation...NVIDIA GeForce 5200 FX.

Does Crunchbang Linux automatically install the necessary graphics drivers, during installation, or would I be able to choose NOT to install them and do so through the EnvyNG script(i.e. would this driver install have to be done manually) or does Crunchbang do it automatically at some stage?

In Ubuntu, that balloon comes up saying "Click here to install restricted drivers". I just ignore it, simply install Envy and run Envy to install the drivers.

What is the procedure for NVIDIA driver installation in Crunchbang Linux?

    Hi ArtF10

The NVIDIA drivers are handled in the exact same way as a vanilla Ubuntu install, i.e. they are treated as restricted hardware and can be turned on/off with the restricted device manager.

    Hope this helps :)

I was not too comfortable with Openbox so logged into the XFCE session and installed Envy, but the X-Server was somehow not configured correctly. As a result, I have not been able to successfully use EnvyNG with Crunchbang even though it worked smoothly with Xubuntu. My reason for using it would have been to setup Dual monitors(through the NVIDIA Control Manager) but it appears that I won't be able to do that.

Even though the above post might indicate otherwise, I'm not trying to be rude....just frustrating that it worked with Ubuntu but now, with Ubuntu(again), it doesn't. Crunchbang detected the onboard sound while Windows did not...which was really good news for me.

Anyways, I have two more non Envy related questions, which I might as well ask here:
1.) When I selected "Enable Automatic Login" from the LIVE-CD(placing a check mark besides the "Enable Automatic Login" box), the system hung. Is this expected for the LIVE CD or will the same happen if I try it fron the regular hard-drive install?

2.) Youtube videos are jittery. Are Java Runtime Environment and Adobe Flash player installed by default?

Your assistane would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    In answer to your questions:

To be honest, I am not sure. As with most things this could depend on your system. In theory, it should work. There maybe an issue when trying it with the LiveCD as the LiveCD already performs automatic login. Sorry I cannot give you a more concrete answer.

2.) Youtube videos are jittery. Are Java Runtime Environment and Adobe Flash player installed by default?

Adobe Flash player is installed by default, as are codecs needed to playback most common media formats. The openjdk-6-jre package should also be installed. Hope this helps.

    1. Well, the "Enable Automatic Login" option worked when I selected it from the HD install(as opposed to the LIVE-CD). You were right about the Live-CD part. So this issue is solved.

    2. Videos on other websites(other than youtube, that is) run quite smoothly so it may just be a youtube thing. I quite pleased with the video playback on other sites so this issue is also solved.

However, I now have 2 font related questions:

    1. I installed a custom GTK2.0 theme(dark) and it is clashing with the font color(grey). How do I change the font color to white?

    2. I installed a custom font and it is being used by everything(including conky) BUT is not being used by the the bottom panel or the dock(top left). How do I change the font settings for these 2 items to the custom font(here, I want to keep the font color the same i.e. white, but change the font itself from Sans10, or whatever it is, to the custom downloaded font)?

This is normally defined in the themes gtkrc file. Locate the theme directory for the theme you installed and then play around with changing the colour values for text. The variables for this will vary and often depend on who coded the theme, however; as a rule of thumb, look for "fg_color" & "text_color" values.

    2. I installed a custom font and it is being used by everything(including conky) BUT is not being used by the the bottom panel or the dock(top left). The panel uses its own rc file. Take a look at ~/.pypanelrc, you should be able to specify a font within it. tablaunch is quite antiquated and will be removed from any future releases. Enter the following terminal command to get a list of available start-up options:

    tablaunch --help

    Hope this helps :)

Thanks Philip, I will try it out.

As for the dual monitor situation, for ATI users ONLY, this has worked in the past with Openbox(so it "should" work):

    -Backup your xorg.conf
    -Remove the line
Option "xinerama" "on"
ATI's big desktop comes into effect.
