Hi, I've been using crunchbang for about 3 days and love it. First time using openbox, and I think openbox will be my choice from now on. Anyway...

I'm wondering if I should install nvidia graphics drivers or not. I did with Ubuntu gnome for compiz effects and such. But are there any advantages to installing drivers for my graphics card with openbox?

Thanks...!

'Would like to use CrunchBang instead of Ubuntu. I am somewhat of a minimilist and prefer your lite edition. That way I can add my choice of programs and not have to wade thru dozens I'll never use.

As to browsers...I have used Kazehakase for several years now as my standard browser. Nothing is faster on MY hardware. I tried to d/l it thru Synaptic and thru apt-get but of the 13 files needed, only 7 make it down and the rest are listed as #404 Not Found. Any ideas how I can get a complete set of files and start using my favorite Kazehakase?

My alternative browser is Galeon which works just fine.

Any help and advice will be much appreciated. Thank you.

I just tried to print something and noticed the printer support has been removed from the Lite. Can someone fill me in on the default packages that are in the full sized CB and the terminal command to open it so I can add it to the menu?

A list of some known issues with the CrunchBang Linux 8.04.02 release. This post will remain sticky and I will try to update it as and when any new issues arise:

94% installer bug
Some users have reported the installer seems to hang at 94%, before continuing and completing the installation. I have not experienced this myself, but I am assured the installation itself is not affected, apart from the user having to wait some additional minutes during the "configuring hardware" stage.

Post GDM login lag
Some users have reported slowness after the GDM login screen. This could be caused by the GDM post login script, which is used to set-up accounts for users with separate home partitions. Once your user account is set-up, this script is not really needed and is safe to remove/rename. Use the following command:

sudo mv /etc/gdm/PostLogin/Default /etc/gdm/PostLogin/Default.crunchbang

Hello,

I installed the full version yesterday, 8.04-2, and after the install I checked the repositories, update the list of applications, installed ndiswrapper and so and configured the wifi quite easily (pcmcia card Realtek with netma 512 Windows driver). Then I was suprised, as I tried to remove OpenOffice suite, as I prefer using Abiword that's lighter, along with Gnumeric : Removing Openoffice.org would remove 800 mo or so of all kind of applications and system packages, thus breaking the system : is it a bug, or is it done on purpose, and if so, what for ?

Hi,
I have installed Crunchbang Linux a few days ago, and I like it. But there are a few things I don't know :
-What is the panel on the bottom (black taskbar with #! logo) ? And how can I customize it, making it transparent for example ?
-Also with this panel, is it possible to hide minimized windows icons ?
-Where is located the Terminator config file ?
-How set windows half-transparent ? For example, I'd like to have all my inactive windows with a semi-transparency effect, automatically. Is it possible ? How ?
-Do you know complete icons themes which look nice with Crunchbang (dark icons) ? With complete, I mean with all icons, for each MIME types, and buttons in tools bars. A simple dark Tango would be great, but I don't find it.
-Do you know nice windows themes ? Dark too I mean. Default with Crunchbang is grey. I'd like a black one.
-Is it possible to have a transparent tablaunch ? How ?

Thanks.

Post scriptum : it's possible some answer were given in the forum, but I didn't find them. Sorry.

Hi guys, i just started using crunchbang on my macbook (2006) and just wanted to say hi to everyone and a big thank you for this distro, it works well on the macbook (still working out a few problems with touchpad sound and the webcam). It has also given me a few good ideas for the custom ubuntu install i use on my main pc (basically ubuntu core with openbox and carlio dock). I am also looking forward to a x64 verson if its in the works.

I know this is not the support section but its just a quick one word answer so i will be naughty hear goes.

What do you use to automount usb cd drives ect on crunchbang ?

Anyways thanks again for the distro, seen you on the forms.

I've been trying to find the best solution for using the best of 64 bit architecture, and not loosing usability and elegance of CrunchBang. About differences between 32 and 64 bits on the same processor:
http://www.scribd.com/doc/363677/Benchmarks-AMD64-in-32bit-mode-vs-64bit-mode-Ubuntu
Next problem - the best application for digital photo processing is DigiKam (which requires kde-desktop). So probably simplest solution: to install Kubuntu + OpenBox + scripts from CB. After reading some comparisons, I've found that - strangely enough - Ubuntu has better support from Canonical than Kubuntu. The same version - and Gnome based version has less errors.
Solution: Ubuntu_amd64 minimal installation/ext3 -> install kde-desktop -> install OpenBox + CB scripts. Seems to be going the longest possible way :) .
By the way, menu under right mouse button (in my current, i386 CB) is so intuitive and obvious its hard to use start menu in Windows back again!
[I have no idea which section this topic should belong to]

I would like to be able to listen to music stored on that partition while I'm enjoying my Crunchbang awesomeness. When I open the mount disk utility, my Windows partition doesn't even appear... is it possible I'm missing some really basic driver for the Windows filesystem, or something like that?

I installed #! Linux on my 128 RAM laptop, wich can be used with a 1024*768 resolution on Windows Me. In Crunchbang, it's only 800*600, and all my screen isn't used, only the middle.
Before Crunchbang, I installed Xubuntu, and I had the same problem, but I solved it with the displayconfig-gtk command. But when I do it in #!, nothing happens.

Hi all! I'd first of all like to thank Philip for his great work on #! I've been using it from the beginning, tried to come back to Hardy or OpenSuse recently, but I remain a big fan of #!, which is the fastest and the most reliable distro I've ever used.

That being said, I'd like to ask how to define the preferred applications. In particular, I'd like to make Epiphany my default browser, in place of Firefox, so that for example Epiphany would be launched when clicking on a link in the mail client. I guess xfce-setting-show could be an answer to my question, but changing the default application doesn't have any effect. I'd be pleased to know there's some editable file enabling this, but I can't find it.

Thanks to all, and good afternoon from Brussels, Belgium.

I have come across a strange dependency issue. When I try to remove an application that came with the install (Rhythmbox, for example), I get a message in terminal saying it has dependencies with crunchbang-desktop and asks if I would like to remove it. Basically, I am being told that in order to remove an app I must remove crunchbang and all other apps that came with it as well. I have never seen this with other distros.. any ideas?

Hi,

Pypanel isn't repainting itself and the text is blurry. I get the error "Failed to create background image in ppshade!" if I start pypanel from the shell.

Searching google led me to the following page (the only result!) http://groups.google.com/group/linux.debian.bugs.dist/browse_thread/thread/2761cf126e19256c but I'm not too sure what the best way of dealing with this is.

Think I'll try a different panel for now.

I have just been playing around with Conky and I was trying the battery variable. I noticed that when I unplugged my laptop from AC power it would report "full" even though the battery was not full. A bit of searching around bought up this gem of a link: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=34647

Instead of using the battery variable you can use
${execi 120 acpi -b | awk '{print $3, $4}' | sed -e s/,//2}

So instead of
Battery Status:$alignr${battery_percent BAT1}%

I now use
Battery Status:$alignr${execi 120 acpi -b | awk '{print $3, $4}' | sed -e s/,//2}

I hope this helps someone out =)

EDIT: If you prefer the output to match what the battery variable output would of been (charging x% instead of charging, x%) then just add another -e s/,// to the sed command so it becomes
Battery Status:$alignr${execi 120 acpi -b | awk '{print $3, $4}' | sed -e s/,// -e s/,//}

Hi all :)

There has been some discussion regarding application launchers, see: http://crunchbang.org/forums/topic/gnome-do-is-crashing-in-crunchbang-80402

I thought it would be a good idea to open a new thread so that the discussion can continue. Basically, I am interested to know what people think about the current openbox menu + tablaunch + gmrun set-up? And whether or not tablaunch should be replaced by dmenu, or simply removed. Personally, I am in favour of replacing tablaunch with dmenu for the next release. Does anyone have an opinion on this?

Hi all.

I just discovered Crunchbang. I also wrote the Ubuntu-fr Wiki page on Crunchbang.

As Crunchbang is a lightweight version of Ubuntu, I would suggest to publish (whenever possible) a specific eeePC version: OpenBox seems perfect for that type of device. I'm trying to install Crunchbang on an external USB hardrive and use it as a LiveUSB, which would be perfect. By now I didn't manage to do it. I keep trying.

I'm French so I want to modify names of theses files : music, videos, downloads... But when I simply rename the folders, after a reboot, new folders are created with old names :/.

Is there a way to modify that permanently please ?

Hi, thanks for this fantastic distro. I'm a full time student and am always trying to push the help desk to offer students the option of linux or a dual boot, this might be the one to convince them. Running it on a T60 Thinkpad and everything worked with no trouble at all. Love how clean the default desktop looks and how fast it runs.

Again, thanks a bunch.

Hi, I am trying to access the Windows domain at work. I have been able to do this in Ubuntu by installing the following:

$ sudo apt-get install pptp-linux network-manager-pptp

Here's the general procedure:

- Once those two packages have been installed, click on your Network Manager
and select the option for VPN Connections
- Click on Configure VPN; this will open a VPN Connections dialog
- Click the Add button
- Click Forward to create a new VPN connection
- Select PPTP tunnel from the drop-down menu
- Click on the Authentication tab and select "Refuse Chap"
- Give the connection a name, and then type in
your vpn server path, such as vpn.your.domain.com
- Click Forward and then Finish to complete the process
- Reboot your machine and you will see that the new connection is listed
under your network manager; look under the VPN Connections
- Select your new VPN connection under the VPN Connections menu in your network manager.

Once I have authenticated with the domain, I can then connect to the desired server via Samba (smb://), which I usually do using Konqueror.

So, in #!, I have installed pptp-linux and network-manager-pptp, but I cannot see any VPN options through the network manager. I'm sure that there must be a way to configure this through the command line, but I have not figured it out. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to enable the PPTP connection through the terminal, or how to get the network manager to play nice in CrunchBang?

Thank you!

- Darrin

(Edit: I did not mean to put this in the News and Announcements section; I noticed the drop-down menu as I was clicking the post button, and when you go back in to edit the post, it does not let you change the posting location. Sorry.)

I am new to OpenBox and need a little help editing the rc. Which part do I edit to remove the menu at the bottom left? Also, my keyboard layout seems to be in maybe British English or something. My @ sign is where the " sign is and a few other shift keys are switched around. How can I fix this?
