Hi Benoit :)

Welcome to the forums and thank you for your feedback. The 8.04.02 LiveCD does suffer from the 94% installer bug, however, most of the time the installation will complete, it just takes some time and a little patience ;)

FYI: The new forums go live tonight and I have now disabled the registration on these forums. You are one of the last users to register! If you would like to register on the new forums, you are more than welcome :)

The new CrunchBang Linux website, forums, wiki and blog go live tonight. It is all very exciting! Moving CrunchBang Linux to its own domain is a big step-up for the project and hopefully this new site will go a long way to improving CrunchBang Linux and the discussions surrounding it.

Regarding these current forums, I will be making them read-only and will redirect the registration page to the new forums. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to date, your support and feedback has been/is really appreciated!

Anyhow I would love to know what you think of the new website and services. All suggestions for improvements, general feedback and comments are most welcome, so please leave them in this thread:

I test the CD-live from "CrunchBang Linux 8.04.02 Download Locations" but can't finish the installation (stopped at 94%).
I use the "CrunchBang Linux 8.04.02 Alternative Installation" with your script and everything is installed.

Hi, I've been using crunchbang for about 3 days and love it. First time using openbox, and I think openbox will be my choice from now on. Anyway...

I'm wondering if I should install nvidia graphics drivers or not. I did with Ubuntu gnome for compiz effects and such. But are there any advantages to installing drivers for my graphics card with openbox?

Thanks...!

My initial impression are that it is fantastic! Thank you.

I can not believe how fast it is! The new panel is much more pleasant to use. The dark theme took me a while to adjust to. Doesn't really matter since there are many other themes to choose from.

I found that I had to add gnome-power-manager to the autostart.sh otherwise, the power button options etc cannot be set with the menu item "Screensaver & Power Management".

This is the fastest setup I have ever used. Strangely, the slowest program to load is the Terminator. I'd have thought that would be one of the fastest.

I modified the openbox-logout script to include suspend and hibernate buttons since I use these features all the time. If anyone is interested this is the command to use:
gnome-power-cmd.sh hibernate #hibernates
gnome-power-cmd.sh suspend #suspends

My main problems are with Intrepid and nothing to do with CrunchBang. Unfortunately, my wifi is broken in Intrepid. This is the first wifi problem I have experienced in linux and it's really annoying. Seems that many people are having problems with both network manager and wicd. In my case, my intel3945 card seems to be detected and working but it won't see my home wireless router. It finds about 10 other networks from my street but not mine! Doesn't matter what security I try. Doesn't even see it without security. Frustrating.

Also, the xorg.conf that comes with Intrepid is almost blank. That means you have to find a synaptics touchpad section from the net as a template to work from. Otherwise, things like horizontal scrolling don't work. Plus, circular scrolling is brilliant. Should be default.

Anyway, I'm very happy with CrunchBang 8.10. Great setup. Very easy to customize.
It is so good, I'll put up with the wireless problem in the Intrepid base. Thanks.

'Would like to use CrunchBang instead of Ubuntu. I am somewhat of a minimilist and prefer your lite edition. That way I can add my choice of programs and not have to wade thru dozens I'll never use.

As to browsers...I have used Kazehakase for several years now as my standard browser. Nothing is faster on MY hardware. I tried to d/l it thru Synaptic and thru apt-get but of the 13 files needed, only 7 make it down and the rest are listed as #404 Not Found. Any ideas how I can get a complete set of files and start using my favorite Kazehakase?

My alternative browser is Galeon which works just fine.

Any help and advice will be much appreciated. Thank you.

Edit: Nevermind, I installed rss-glx, xscreensaver-data-extra, and xscreensaver-gl-extra.

You could also just make a launcher on the desktop to launch the openbox menu command, I'm not running crunchbang I don't know the command, but I know its implemented and should work.

Yesterday when I installed, I also found a 94% completed that lasted at this number, but as it was possible for me to surf at same time, from within the next virtuel desktop, I could patiently wait that the system completes the install, and suddenly came a window, saying install was finished, and asking if I wanted to continue with live mode or if I preferred to reboot.

So, it's just a matter of patience, I think. While I'm talking about that, how come it's not possible to get a choice for Grub where and whether to install it or not ? (at MBR, or nowhere, or at the / partition ?). Because my beautiful Grub has now the need to be reinstalled, for me to be able to continue using the gorgious menu.lst I forged little by little along the years ! \o/ ! ... :-)

Hi corenominal,

I think I tried to remove just the crunchbang-desktop metapackage, to remove the dependancy from the rest, and I even tried to re-install Openoffice.org, then crunchbang-desktop, to make the package manager believe it was "installed by hand" and thus not needed by the rest of the world ! But for Openoffice.org, I got the message "installed by hand" allright, but it was still not possible to remove it.

I'm not interested in keeping it along with other applications, because if I do so, I'll have to accept all the updates to come, when updating/upgrading whole system, which considering Openoffice's weight is not that a good bargain !

I indeed thought about the light version, but I didn't yet see what comes with it.

Thanks.

Hi melodie :)

This is due to the "crunchbang-desktop" metapackage which lists all the packages needed to build the system as dependencies. I guess this could be considered as a bug, although Ubuntu's metapackages exhibit similar properties; have you ever tried removing PulseAudio from Ubuntu Hardy? Anyhow, I guess the easiest workaround would be to install Abiword and Gnumeric and leave OO.o as is. Other than that, the other option would be to install the "lite" version and then install packages as needed.

Hello,

I installed the full version yesterday, 8.04-2, and after the install I checked the repositories, update the list of applications, installed ndiswrapper and so and configured the wifi quite easily (pcmcia card Realtek with netma 512 Windows driver). Then I was suprised, as I tried to remove OpenOffice suite, as I prefer using Abiword that's lighter, along with Gnumeric : Removing Openoffice.org would remove 800 mo or so of all kind of applications and system packages, thus breaking the system : is it a bug, or is it done on purpose, and if so, what for ?

Hey !
I found out on my own a way to have a transparent pypanel. It's very simple : just have to modify the "shade" category in ~/.pypanelrc (i think it's this file).
I also found icons and openbox themes.
But I don't find how :
-Having a half-transparent Terminator
-Making half-transparent inactive windows
-Having a transparent Tablaunch
The most important is for Tablaunch ! I hate this black bar ! I want a transparent one !^^
Thanks !
