The affiliate advertising can be disabled but it struck me as lacking class to put something like that in your OS by default.  I thought the newly added request for donations on download was a less invasive way of monetizing the OS, but maybe the request for donations doesn't work that well.

But, if Ubuntu is going to be ad supported, I don't know what is going to happen to distros based on Ubuntu.

Another Another thing: The lens does not directly query the amazon servers but uses some JSON-API on a subdomain of ubuntu.com (Can't seem to find the damn link right now). The API is not limited to only amazon so more could follow.
