I moved from Ubuntu because of Unity more than anything else. Just it's lack of configurabilitly spoke volumes about where Mr. Shuttleworth wants the distro to move to and it's somewhere I didn't want to end up at and I've never had really smooth experiences with different DE spins of the distro.

The affiliate advertising can be disabled but it struck me as lacking class to put something like that in your OS by default. I thought the newly added request for donations on download was a less invasive way of monetizing the OS, but maybe the request for donations doesn't work that well.

A lot of distros need donations and/or ads to survive. Some distros would be fine without this, like Debian, Fedora, openSUSE and I think Arch and Mageia too. So, if you want a distro without ads and without pleadings for donations, those are good examples.

They're integrating amazon search in the dash, and as I see it, there is nothing wrong with that. Of course, having all the choice of excellent distros and the fact that you haven't/wouldn't pay a single dime to use Ubuntu in the first place makes the transition to something else, provided you feel your privacy's at stake, much more easier.
