Don't mess around with your ALSA implementation, it should be fine. You're only going to create more problems for yourself by upgrading or reinstalling ALSA. AVL uses a hack that routes flashplayer output into a JACK server. So if you all ready have JACK running with HDMI port 0,7 selected for the output, you will hear it. For VLC, you have to select either ALSA with HDMI port 0,7 manually when the JACK server is not running, or if the JACK server is running, you can select JACK as the output module. You may have to use the connections tab in qjackctl to route the sound to your HDMI port, and you may also have to install the JACK plugin for VLC. Either way, you should be ready to start messing around with ardour, since it appears your JACK server is configured and working. To keep cpufrequtils from causing xruns, before you start JACK run this from a terminal:

sudo cpufreq-set -rg performance

And if you want to disable cpufrequtils altogether, you can install a program called "rcconf" and run it as root. From there you should be able to find the cpufreq daemon and disable it.

If you're getting xruns then JACK is running, and so is ALSA. You have to use a program that specifically outputs to JACK to test it out. JACK takes over your sound device, so programs that would normally output to ALSA won't be audible. Most programs won't send output to JACK unless you tell them to. Try using a media player like vlc with vlc-plugin-jack or something like that and then go into the preferences and specify JACK as the output module. Also, it's kinda extreme to try and use your hdmi port at a sample rate of 9600, that probably explains the xruns somewhat. xruns can also be caused by cpu freqency scaling. To check to see if that is the case, just do this:

ps -ef | grep cpu

and post the results. Hopefully there is no output.

Once you get ALSA working without using JACK, you can implement these settings from the qjackctl setup tab:

or you can run JACK from the command line with the same settings using this command:

/usr/bin/jackd -p1024 -t2000 -dalsa -dhw:0 -r96000 -p1024 -n2 -D -Phw:0,7

The annoying part about using JACK from the command line is, a lot of apps don't create connections to the JACK server without your intervention. You can use the patchage app in order to edit connections, but it's probably best for you to just use qjackctl for now.

AVL might not come with the command line mixer installed. You can try and install the GUI one from the repos like this:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install alsamixergui

The reason for suggesting the GUI one is that the cli one is part of alsa-utils, and you probably don't want to mess with any of AVL's default ALSA binaries. You need to use some kind of mixer to verify that the channels you are trying to use aren't muted, because that could be the cause of the problem you are having.

As I pointed out, that error message doesn't mean that ALSA isn't working, it shows up because your HDMI port is an output only, it can't be used for microphones and such. Thus it can be used for playback but it can not be used for capture.

Your .asoundrc should be pointing to device 7, not device 8.

If you want to get this working, you need to quit messing around with JACK for now. JACK sends sound output to ALSA or OSS devices, so if you can't get some kind of sound coming out of your ALSA device first, it's pointless to mess around with JACK. We know you aren't interested in watching youtube videos, it's just part of the troubleshooting procedure. Have you tried using vlc and specifing hdmi 0,7 as the device in the preferences? Once you get that part working, I can generate a working JACK configuration from my machine for you.

Also, PCM stands for "Pulse-code modulation" it's a way of representing analog signals as digital code. I wouldn't worry yourself with that for now though

You also have an onboard intel hdmi port on your motherboard, which also supports sound via hdmi. Try and disable it in the BIOS. Then try using the command "alsamixer" from the command line and make sure all of your hdmi channels are unmuted (ALSA mutes all channels by default usually, don't ask me why). Use mplayer, vlc, or some other media player that lets you manually select a sound card other than the one ALSA defaults to in order to test out the various outputs you have. Almost always with Nvidia cards, the right one will be device 7, so it will say something like "HDA Nvidia 0,7" or if you haven't yet disabled the intel card, it will be "HDA Nvidia 1,7".
