^ I love 2001. The HAL (letters after IBM of course) bit is amazing. My dad watched it repeatedly over 3 days in the cinema when it originally came out. I think the icon of HAL says a lot about our relationship to technology, and as Einstein suggests (to name just the most popular proponent of the idea, though others like Foucault are perhaps more insightful) it will, or has already, taken over our use for it and makes us redundant rather than more efficient in a socially minded way. Going off on a tangent here, yep, but across the road from where I work there is a Tesco. They are on almost every main street in Liverpool, literally. Liverpool has the worst quality of life in Britain, and the CEO of Tesco is from Liverpool. Yet it constantly installs more self-service check outs that put people out of work. I was in there this morning, and the sound of multiple self-service simultaneously chiming the same sentence is reminiscient of HAL in 2001.

^ The book is really good, too (2001). It's a rare case where a book, made after a movie, can stand on it's own as a classic. Just for fun, watch "The Abyss" afterwards and see if there are overlaps

-Hinto
