Love the fully featured minimal distribution geared toward programmers, hackers, and self starters. It's been a full year of Linux as my main operating system. Having tried with Ubuntu, Mint, & CentOS, found a keeper in CrunchBang. Actually, it was openbox window manager - default window manager of CrunchBang. Looking to develop an interactive script to aid, and reinforce user interactions with computer, knowledge and data.

You might want to think about the following when running Sid:
1) apt-get install apt-listbugs
2) a good backup solution (anything, rsync, remastersys, refractasnapshot or even live-build, or one of the gui frontends for rsync (dejadup, luckybackup) or the more professional solutions like clonezilla, fsarchiver and such)

Sid breaks seldom, in my little experience, but when it breaks it can break horrible, and usually when i don't need it at all (aka: busy with other things). You could, for example, use VirtualBox and rsync the whole sheebang to a VirtualBox installation (with the according --excludes), say once a week. Or if you got an old PC use it for that. Or install in VirtualBox, too, and before you upgrade upgrade in VirtualBox. If all goes well, do the same on the main PC (not a very good solution, but better than nothing).

On my main PC i don't do backups anymore (of the OS), as it was planned as a temporary installation. If it breaks i will reinstall (because i want to anyway that is no biggie). Problem: the dang thing doesn't break (for 1 or 2 years now).

Anyway: pop it around your head, install apt-listbugs in each case (but don't take the infos too serious), and, first of all: good luck.

kols wrote:

ew wrote:

But if the 686-kernel works fine, then there probably isn`t any need to use a non-pae kernel. i686 should work fine if you got at least 1 GB Ram... Some would say that 512 MB is enough, but my limit for a i686 kernel, is 1 GB RAM... Otherwise I choose non-pae if they exists for the distro that I`m Installing....

Får vel takke på norsk også, da;)

Well, from the siduction-list I installed the packages for the version you suggested without pae-support, just plain 686. But, when I boot, I have the option to boot with pae. I haven't tried it yet, though. I have 2gig ram, but a single-core processor. I read somewhere that pae is used for ram > 3 gig and dual core and up.

In general, what are the differences between the stock (?) kernel that comes with the 486 kernel, siduction and liquorix ?

Either way, my laptop seems to be running fine! I'll test it some more, but I think you just spared me the need of buying a new laptop!=)

Then I guess you will be fine booting without PAE. If you have the option to boot with PAE then I guess the default has to be non-pae, otherwise it would be strange to have the options to boot with PAE...

Anyway, with 2 GB RAM you shouldn`t have any issue running i386, i486 and i686, PAE or non-PAE. The only thing is that non-pae should perform slightly better(be a little faster), but you never ever will use more than 2 GB RAM with Crunchbang. With normal use you will find yourself using maybe 500-600 MB RAM, and you have to run a lot simultaniously to get past 1 GB..

I`m not sure what`s the differences between stock kernel, siduction and liquorix. I`ve never tried Liquorix, but as I understand it they have a special focus towards multimedia... The stock kernel I assume is a bit more conservative than Siduction, and that`s perhaps why Siduction is a bit ahead of Debian with the Linux-kernels. Debian is still on 3.8 kernels, while Siduction is on 3.9 kernels. But others may be able to tell you more about the difference, I`m just guessing based on my experience:)

How do you listen to music?

re: vinyl vs. digital, whatever floats your boat. I love digital, the advancements in ADC/DAC since about, what, '88? '90?... have been staggering. IMO, the so-called advantage of vinyl over digital is similar to that of single-diode (and other) tube amps over solid state, given that all have a fairly flat frequency response to begin with... emphasizing certain frequencies sort of tricks the ear into thinking it sounds better. It certainly sounds different, but there's really no such thing as reproducing what the sound engineer was hearing, ever. There have been great advancements in turntables and styluses too, vinyl can produce awesome sound. Everyone should walk into an audiophile equipment store at least once in their life and sit in their listening room, with whatever equipment they'll set you up with. Hearing well recorded music on nice equipment in a fairly neutral room with speakers set up to produce a deep and wide soundstage is fairly mind blowing.

I find it hilarious that a lot of hip-hop, downtempo, club music, etc... production is done in digital and then has a record-hiss track mixed back in (E.T.B.G. - Walking Wounded, for example). Ha!!! If those recordings are also released on vinyl, does the listener hear twice the hiss, or does their brain eliminate almost all of it?
