Other than Ubuntu, Puppy Linux is probably the only Linux distribution I follow. I have been a Puppy fanboy [yeah, I do not mind admitting it!] for a long time, so I was thrilled to read about the latest release, version 4.00. From the release notes:

Finally it has happened! The last 'official' release of Puppy was version 3.01, released October 15, 2007. Version 4.00 is happening 6 months later, which is an incredibly long time considering the previous frenetic schedule of releases. Anyway, here it is: the live-CD file is 'puppy-4.00-k2.6.21.7-seamonkey.iso' and is just 87.1MB. Download from http://puppylinux.com/download/.

Also from the release notes, and something that I am particularly pleased with:

GTK1 and Tcl/Tk abandoned. The decision was made to go for a totally GTK2-based system. This meant that there could be a consistent user-interface throughout and further reduced the size.

I am downloading the live-CD as I type. I will give the system a run tomorrow night, and if I get time, I will post with my initial thoughts/feedback.

Gutsy Upgrade Woes

This morning I attempted to upgrade my desktop from Feisty to Gutsy. It all started well, I made sure I had a backup of my home directory and then I started the upgrade.

My system achieved a good connection and it downloaded all 1110 packages in about 3 hours or so — not bad for a half MB line! Then, as the new packages were being installed and configured my system decided to stop responding :| I tried a reboot and managed to bring up a login screen. I entered my credentials but then nothing. No desktop, no panels no anything. I'm sure I could have rescued the system, but to be honest, I think it'll be easier to start afresh.

On the upside, I'm now typing this post using Puppy Linux, my next favourite distro. Yay for Puppy Power! :D

I've started the 7.10 CD download and it should be complete within an hour or two. Hopefully I'll be back in the land of Ubuntu before the end of the day.

I like Puppy Linux and I've been following it for a while now. It amazes me just how small the distro is, yet still fully functional. It's probably my favourite flavour of Linux for low-spec machines.

Release notes for version 3.00 can be found at:
http://www.puppylinux.com/download/release-3.00.htm

Random thought: I wonder if my fondness for Puppy is related to the mutual love affair that is me and daisy?
