Brightness GTK+ Theme

Yesterday I published Darkness Returns, a GTK+ and Openbox theme. Today, in an effort to move more CrunchBang Linux material onto my site and wiki, I am publishing Brightness, another GTK+ and Openbox theme. I no longer use this theme myself, but I know some users have stated they prefer the theme which was used in CrunchBang Linux 7.10.2 [I guess you cannot please all of the people all of the time.] Personally, I prefer the increased contrast between application and data provided by Darkness Returns, but there you go.

As with Darkness Returns, Brightness uses the Clearlooks GTK+ engine. I have made the theme available on my wiki. I have used the theme under Openbox with no known issues. I have not tested the theme under GNOME.

Regarding the origin of the theme, if I remember correctly, I used the Gilouche theme as basis to work from. Even though I prefer to use a darker theme, I still really like the openSUSE artwork, it is professional and consistently good.

It occurred to me this morning that I have been using the same GTK+ theme for a couple months. I consider this fact to be a result; I have comfortably settled into using a theme and I had not fully realised it, that has to be a good sign! While I enjoy playing around with the look 'n' feel of my desktop, I cannot help but think it is a waste of time and I should be doing something more constructive; therefore, this morning's realisation comes as something of a relief.

The theme I have settled into using is called Darkness Returns. I named it so because CrunchBang Linux was originally distributed with a dark theme, then it changed to a light theme, before moving back to a dark theme for the last release; hence, Darkness Returns — pure genius :)

Darkness Returns is based on the Clearlooks GTK+ engine. It is not actually as dark as some dark themes, instead it is more of a halfway house between the lightness and the darkness; maybe I should have named it "Sitting On The Fence"? Anyhow, a couple of people have asked me for the theme and so I have made it available on my wiki. More screenshots of the theme can also be seen on my wiki: CrunchBang Linux 8.04.01 Screenshots. Feel free to use and abuse :)

Anyway, Vincent of the Xubuntu Blog has very kindly translated the images into Dutch. Thanks Vincent :)

Random Ubuntu Advocacy - Italian & Portuguese

I think I've said this before, however I'll say it again, the Ubuntu community rocks! For me, it is the main reason why I use Ubuntu, albeit a modified version.

Portuguese images

Anyway, while I've been tucked-up in bed and snoring my head off, Miguel Wahnon Monteiro has very kindly translated the Random Ubuntu Advocacy images into Portuguese. He is also hosting them from his domain. Thank you Miguel :)

I've also uploaded Miguel's translated images to my file server, to ease/share any load. You can see the demo here. The code needed to display the images is below:

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://crunchbang.net/advocacy/pt/ubuntu_199_164.js">
</script>
<noscript>

<img src="http://crunchbang.net/advocacy/pt/199_164_ubuntu.png" alt="Comece Ubuntu."></a>
</noscript>

Italian images

Also, Davide Pedrelli has been busy translating the images into Italian. He has also put together a couple of modules for the Joomla platform 1.0x. I'm not familiar with Joomla, but if Davide's site is anything to go by, I'm sure the modules work well.

As with Miguel's images, I've uploaded Davide's Italian versions to my file server. You can witness the demo here, and the code needed to display the images is below:

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://crunchbang.net/advocacy/it/ubuntu_199_164.js">
</script>

<img src="http://crunchbang.net/advocacy/it/199_164_ubuntu.png" alt="Installa Ubuntu."></a>
</noscript>

Finally, Aldo Latino has also translated the images into Italian, before converting them into a rather nifty animated gif. Nice work, thank you Aldo :)

I've received a few emails in the past couple of weeks regarding the availability of a replacement image for the Ubuntu Christmas Campaign image. Feeling a little guilty at not having had something ready, forward planning is something I need to work on, I've now created a set of Ubuntu advocacy images designed to be displayed randomly.

The images are based on a set of Ubuntu banners that I created last year. The images are exactly the same size, dimensionally, as the Christmas image, and therefore replacement should be a simple operation.

The image pool

Demo of random display

You can witness the randomness in action on this demo page.

Get the code

Copy & paste the following code into your HTML/blog template where you would like the random image placement to occur:

The brushes are quite large, but now that GIMP supports scalable brushes they can be easily scaled down in size.

There are 3 brushes, colour, shaded and mono, see the example image below:

Get the brushes

Download the tarball from the address below and extract to
~/.gimp-2.4/brushes
.
http://crunchbang.org/misc/ubuntu-logo-gimp-brushes.tar.gz

Alternatively, if you're an Ubuntu user you may find it quicker to use the command line, follow these instructions:

1. Open a new terminal window and move into your GIMP brushes directory:

cd ~/.gimp-2.4/brushes

2. Download the tarball with the following command:

wget http://crunchbang.org/misc/ubuntu-logo-gimp-brushes.tar.gz

3. Extract the tarball:

tar xvf ubuntu-logo-gimp-brushes.tar.gz

4. Clean up, delete the tarball:

rm ubuntu-logo-gimp-brushes.tar.gz

Enjoy :)

A Merry Ubuntu Christmas - Final Update

Back in the beginning of November I wrote a post entitled, "A Merry Ubuntu Christmas". The idea of the post was to help spread the word about Ubuntu by asking people to consider giving it on CD as a Christmas gift to family, friends and colleagues.

I asked blog/website owners in the Ubuntu community to help out by placing an image based link on their sites. Many bloggers and webmasters did just that and I'd like to thank them all for their support. Others went a step further and translated the image in various different languages. The image was also adapted to show support for the Kubuntu and Xubuntu flavours of Ubuntu. Again, I'd like to thank everyone who helped out.

Now, at this point I'd like to provide some idea of the impact the Ubuntu Christmas campaign had on Ubuntu downloads. Unfortunately I can't as I have no idea, and I'm not sure anyone at Canonical would know either. All I can provide are some basic figures from the server from which the campaign images were hosted on, here they are…

Total number of requests: 1,163,790
Total bandwidth consumed: 7.64GB

As you can see, the images were requested over a million times. That's quite an impressive figure, even if I do say so myself; I think I'll declare the campaign as a success ;)

Anyhow, I just wanted to provide this final update before I knock off to spend time with the people closest to me. Merry Christmas everyone, have a good one!

Openbox, OpenOffice.org & GTK

While I'm on the topic of Openbox and themes, one thing that's been bugging me is OpenOffice.org and its refusal to natively dress in a GTK theme. I know it's a trivial issue, but when you've put some effort into creating a nice theme you at least want your applications to use it.

Anyhow, after a little Googling I found a fix:

1. Install
openoffice-gtk
package from Ubuntu repositories with this terminal command:

sudo apt-get install openoffice.org-gtk

2. Open your personal Openbox startup file for editing:

gedit ~/.config/openbox/autostart.sh

or system-wide startup file:

gksudo gedit /etc/xdg/openbox/autostart.sh

3. Add the following lines, save and exit:

#Force OpenOffice.org to use GTK theme
export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome

4. Restart Openbox.

A couple of screenshots, in case you have no idea what I'm rambling on about :)

Before applying GTK theme:

Update @ 14:15 23/12/2007

When using Tango icons, don't forget to install the corresponding package for OpenOffice.org:

sudo apt-get install openoffice.org-style-tango

See updated screenshot below, this time with icons :)

Further to my previous post about changing the Ubuntu default theme, I've now created an Openbox theme that works well, aesthetically, with the Darkilouche GTK theme. The theme is quite basic and simply sets the styling of the window borders and main Openbox menu. See the screenshot below:

Darkilouche Openbox Theme

Copy the contents of the code box below into a new file and save to,
~/.themes/Darkilouche/openbox-3/themerc
Alternatively, download and extract this tarball to your
~/.themes
directory. Note, the tarball contains both GTK and Openbox themes. Use ObConf to activate the theme when ready.
