The best thing about Microsoft Windows 7

Unless you have been hiding under a rock, you will probably already know that Microsoft Windows 7 is released today. I have not tried Microsoft Windows 7 and to be honest, I have no intention of doing so. This is not a reflection of the quality of Microsoft products, it is just that I have no need for it.

So, for me, the best thing about the Microsoft Windows 7 release is the thought of all the cheap hardware that will soon become available as retailers try to quickly offload their "defunct" Windows Vista machines. For the average Linux user, I would imagine that there is no better time to invest in new hardware and install their OS of choice. And with the release of Ubuntu 9.10 just around the corner, the timing of the Windows 7 release could not be better!

Marcio, did you read the post properly?

Quite a positive way to look at a Windows release, isn't it?

If fiscally possible, I would hope the buyer chooses to acquire hardware with GNU/Linux pre-installed rather than hardware with Windows.

  5. Damien wrote,

A lot of retailers are, and have been for quite some time, offering free upgrades to Windows 7 for people who purchase Windows Vista machines. And I would imagine that most GNU Linux users would be putting together their own machines, and right now that's not too expensive either!

P.S. Reaaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllllllllly looking forward to Crunchbang 9.10, Canonical have really flourished with Karmic!

You know, whether we like or not, whether Windows 7 is secure or not, one thing is for sure; it is set to be big and is likely to eclipse Linux even more. As to your point, I think I can agree with you that there will be more cheap hardware available for those of us who cannot afford the expensive ones. That's good news to me

Please send me your old Athlon machine. I had to retire Dad's 64MB Compaq with Win 98. I'll load Xubuntu on your hand-me-down, and bring one more user to the light. Thanks!

Windows 7's system requirements are about the same as Vista's (and it generally seems to run at least perceptibly faster on the same hardware, if not actually faster by a proper measurement) so this might not happen very much actually.

  9. Philip wrote,

@mathw: I understand what you are saying, but if I were a Windows user and I was looking to purchase a new system, I would be looking for a Windows 7 system — unless I was specifically looking for a bargain. ;)

I have no use for Windows 7 also. Some retailers are advertising Windows 7 heavily because they haven't been selling enough PC's. They want to sell more PC's by making outrageous claims for Windows 7.

What a wonderful business Microsoft has got. Retailers trying to move as many PC's as possible, doing the hard sell, and Microsoft sits back and rakes in the money. Microsoft doesn't even need to advertise themselves, the retailers will do it for them. They don't need my money and I'm not going to give it to them.

The Only Difference/In Coding And Off The Shelf Tests Exist ONLY In W-7 64Bit Edition. Major League Failure Already, I Cannot Believe They Have Released This System Morally & Ethically It Should Be Illegal!

The real interest right now remains O-BSD, O-Solaris, Milax A Minimal O-Solaris Project; And Of Course CrunchBang….Fedora 12 A Failure/ Scientific Linux, Pretty Stable And Nice.

I Can Never Figure Out Why Slow Bulky Ugly Buggy "Software" Remains The 'Mass Appeal.'

I Am Ready To Kill The C-Phones, Ditch The Beepers, Burn The Cray's, Destroy; All Forms Of Bloat, And Just Settle Back Into Simplicity With An Amiga, Or TI-92 Puter, Not Calculator…Play Pong Or Something……alas I realize I can Have Both Worlds With CrunchBang….Sleep Now…Sleep….Openbox, Flowers, Simple, IX, X, Terminal… Many Machines On Ix

Sivar, you are absolutely correct in saying it should be illegal what M$ put out there as "finished products" and the prices they charge for them! I was 5 years before i moved to xp from 98 and now I have moved from xp to linux (mint 7) and have not looked back one bit. Vista was/is a complete joke, only M$ were the only ones laughing at how much they 0wn the industry! It seems to me that vista was preparing the hype for win7 by vista being so slow and annoying and etc. etc. etc. so of course win7 would seem like a dream compared to it… but like it has been said already, vwin7 isn't even a new product! last thing… does anyone else besides me have friends and family who have pc's with windows and are constantly getting phone calls and invitations to fix their machines???? My permanent solution now is "Move To Linux!" FOSS 4ever! peace!

Windows 7 Ultimate, oh yea…!!! The shiznet like this should of been released 2 years ago…

    Mint what? Please…

Desktop Linux based OS will never be like Windows, Period..

    For those talking about underhood:

The day when Gnu/Linux Desktop smokes Windows it will be the day i will take a Gun and shoot myself in the head.. Why, cuz then my root will be anyones root… Thank you very much.. As for security of these so called easy to use linux distros oh wait sudo my ass, they are more unsecure than they claim.. Stop saying Linux is secure, cuz the last i checked contents of /etc was readable by default for regular user on almost all linux distributions…

Linux and any other OS is secure as much as you secure it, claiming it is secure by default, give me the damn machine i will show you what is secure by default.. The moment that ethernet wire is plugged into the damn ethernet card is the day your security by default is lost..

the famous iptables is as good as the kernel stability and as good linux user is i hate how some people say i am linux user oh yea, and i am secured.. usually n00b talking out of his ass.. so next time when u install your security by default try reading /etc/ssh/sshd_config by regular user, then you get your security by default 1 on 1 served to you in clear plain text…

Gnu in the hands of a pro is secure, and the pro is still wondering should he put more security and apply new security policies on its core and distribution level of the network. so yea, i love linux… but i love windows just as much… stop saying microsoft sucks, cuz you know you suck and that is a good thing to know about you..

Tried Windows 7 and seems quite good.

Also, it's very look like some Linux distro. It's hard to not noticed partition on installer, network tools, taskbar like tint2 (but with more functionality), Windows Explorer, .. likes same on Linux with tendencies to be better and more powerfull.

Vista eats 1,5 GB of RAM, Windows 7 eats 500-600 MB of RAM.

I think that windows users will embrace new lower consuption system, so Philip, I'm not too sure that hardware will be on bargain. It just might be the opposite.. With smaller mem. footprint, we may expect lower hardware with same or higher prices..

And who knows why it's good.

    Regards!

Yes, but in the short-term, hardware retailers will still want to offload their "old" stock of Vista machines. Now, as a case in point, I purchased a Packard Bell EasyNote Butterfly S last week from a well-known high street retailer and it was significantly reduced because it had Vista installed.

Bring on the Karmic Koala @ crouchingpenguin, I picked up three broken PC's over the weekend, one had a blow power supply, one had a blown graphics card, and the third one had no HD.

I took all three to bits and made a working one with 0.98GiB 1.8Ghz AMD and am treating myself to a 400Gb serial ATA II disk for it on the weekend. Looking forwards to shoving crunchbang 9.10 onto it, my Karma is all good I recycle!

Windows 7 pfft, load of old hype I havent touched windows since XP SP1.

IMO Windows 7 won't dent the popularity of Linux on the desktop. Linux is still primarily enthusiast and spread by word of mouth.

I think people (non enthusiasts) will mostly stick with vista that they had preinstalled rather than Buy Win7.

But the best feature of Win 7 IMO: Window snapping/tiling. Why can't Ubuntu/compiz do this automatically and at least as good as Win7? Tinycore linux is the only distro that i have seen come anywhere near (e.g. open a terminal and it appears in a blank space rather than the last place it was).

    Correct me if i'm wrong.

I was interested in the BlackFriday stats from the States. 600 million spent online. Now there is a big marketing push to culturalize the catchphrase Cyber Monday. Unfortunately OpenMoko doesnt seem to be interested in marketing pushes:)

Windows 7 works better than any other Windows versions other than 3.11 (if anyone remembers, and experienced the good times), but still destroys the entire course of working anyway. But nothing beats Linux and its advance through a solidarity-based way of thinking behind. Would also like to crunch bang Linux distribution that works well in my job. You dare to take ubuntu to the right window manager … ;) Nothing wrong with gnome etc. ..

Hi, I’m just an average user. But I have been exploring linux and Ubuntu for a few years. Finally tried it and it appears to be the “bomb” to me. Microsoft can’t possibly keep the lid on this movement for too much longer It’s just a matter of time.

    1. Consumerism Will Not Die :

Microsoft will never die, its users will continue to support it simply because they are the kind who feel empowered when they spend large sums of money to be socially separated from others.

Oh sure your product-x may be the same as mine, but yours did not cost 300 dollars. That makes me more important because I spend more money, since obviously I am much wealthier than you.

    1. MS Win Window Manager is ancient.

But the best feature of Win 7 IMO: Window snapping/tiling. Why can't Ubuntu/compiz do this automatically and at least as good as Win7?

Not sure what you mean, windows actually can't do alot of the things that all x11 window managers are capable of.

One of the things I've had to scream murder to find is : taekwindow… without it I would rage hard trying to deal with resizing and moving window frames around on a win32 system

I've been using linux for a number of years now. I still have a windows partition, but it has been a long time since I've used it. Just so much wasted space on the hard drive. I was initially just curious, but the more I worked with it, the better I liked it. It's pliable, and allows me to do what I need to do quickly with no fuss. I initially had some problems with 9.10, but I was actually able to fix what problems there were relatively quickly. Rather than the unending "arms race" games that MS was fond of playing. Now, if I'm forced to use windows, I find it tedious. I find myself constantly running into bits of proprietary code here and there. In fact, I don't really work with windows, but around it.
