Becky the Linux user

Last night I installed Linux on Becky's laptop. I have been trying to persuade Becky to give Linux a go for a while, but until now, she had been quite content with using Windows XP. Then, last night, when Becky asked me to create a backup of her collection of digital photos and music, I took the opportunity to ask her [again] if she thought it was about time she dropped her ageing Windows XP installation in favour of modern Linux desktop. To my surprise, she agreed.

So, I created a backup of Becky's data and proceeded to install my latest remastered version Ubuntu. I could of installed a vanilla Ubuntu install, but I wanted her first real experience of Linux to be as smooth as possible. Once the installation had completed, I restored Becky's data and handed back her laptop; she powered it up and proceeded to go about her business.

I waited for the comments and questions, but they never came. As it turned out, I actually ended up pestering her to show her a few things; we had a play with entering a few terminal commands and installing the odd package. Finally, Becky reluctantly said, "It's quite good".

Result :)

I wish my Becky was like that, i'm at the "can we put windows back on?"

  2. Philip wrote,

@Paul: LOL, my Becky is better than yours :P Having said that, it's early days yet.

OK, I'll hold my hands-up (but shhhh, you've got to keep it quiet from Philip)…. I have no idea why I haven't converted before now!

I didn't "relunctantly" agree that it was quite good, more like I didn't want to enthuse too much and cause Philip to gloat over the coming days, weeks, months (!) and constantly tell me "I told you so!" :-)

First impressions are that it is very easy to use, and I haven't noticed the loss of my old OS. I love the clean desktop and easy access menus. Well done, love :-)

I promised, in an earlier post, to let Philip put Linux on my machine as my wedding present to him. Here's hoping that as I've let him have an "early" present, that he comes good on turning up on the day in question :-)

No comment from the user is good. Humans are like Unix, remember: no output, no problem. That was my experience when handing an Ubuntu Dapper laptop to my lady a couple of years back. She found a word processor, a web browser and a mail client and told me it's okay. After that, no news. :-)

I run linux on my computers here at work and at home, but our main system at home, which my wife uses, has a dual boot of XP and Ubuntu. She needs XP to do all of our finances on Microsoft Money, which I still cannot get to work through wine. Another reason she wont make the switch… she is Russian and when she wants to type russian characters, sometimes the keyboard layout switcher works, and sometimes it doesnt. She gets really frustrated and switches back into XP right away.

I did however convert my dad who now loves Ubuntu and my sister who is a serious World of Warcraft player. She loves WoW on Ubuntu because the frame rates compared to XP are much better. Go figure!

Ahh the comfortable silence between installing ubuntu on someones computer and them finding some silly piece of hardware that won't work :(

Good luck, and Betty please point out every small nuisance so it can be considered :)

  9. Becky wrote,

@ Vadim - Spell my name correctly and I'll consider it :-)

Oh, I'm sorry Becky. Had another name on my mind for some reason!

  11. Jason wrote,

Well my Becky might switch if Netflix's 'watch instant' worked on Linux. Until then, she'll stay with XP.

o/ go Philip. It is about time you converted Becky, why did you not listen to him before =p strange that I am just considering using Crunchbang as my full time OS on my new(ish) laptop after it was dodgy on my last one.

  13. Philip wrote,

@Jason Liquorish: "glutton for punishment" comes to mind :)

Philip, where did you meet Becky? Any chance to stumble on another Becky there? :)

I installed Ubuntu on my brothers computer. He didn't like it for one reason or another and after a few weeks of using it, he had me put Windows back on. Two minutes after having Windows he told me he forgot how bad it was, had me put Linux back on and he's been using it ever since.

I find it interesting that you found it necessary to install a remastered Ubuntu first. I totally agree with that. Ubuntu has, I think, lost focus on the user and there is just too much setup when you first install. My dad made a text file of all the stuff he has to remember to do when he installs Ubuntu from scratch and it's huge. There has to be a better solution. People want Linux to just work!

@Stas: We met for the first time when she stepped from her spaceship, which had just landed at the bottom of the garden. She told me she had come in peace, that was good enough for me :) I am sorry to say, the spaceship was a single-seater and she did not bring any friends.

@Luke: I agree, it is interesting. I think if users could run Ubuntu without having to install any non-free software, they would. Unfortunately, for a lot of users, especially those new to Linux, they can't. Having said that, I think Ubuntu is going about it the right way; trying to adhere to the ideals of the FSF, while at the same time making it relatively easy to install non-free components, such as Flash etc. Seems to me to be a rather tricky balancing act :/

My Becky is a Windows bitch. :(

  18. Oliver wrote,

Luke: could you share which steps you think are necessary for a from-scratch Ubuntu install? From my experience, there is: installing Flash/Java/lots of codecs/Thunderbird, enabling password-less login, entering Wifi password. What did I miss?

  19. blink4blog wrote,

well, my version of "Becky" prefer my 4 years old Mac that running Tiger now, but she tend to find Compiz Fusion attractive in my Hardy. For some country like here, silence does not represent OK or UNIX, it may be something negative. For most occasion, feedback is the only way to assume everything is fine. LOLx

  20. Vadim P. wrote,

@Luke Hoersten: It would be a lot more useful if you posted his text file to the ubuntu-desktop team or something like that. While some things like codecs pre-installed are obviously will be a no-no as long as there are legal spikes, things like flash are being worked on.
