Aenigma Fonts for Ubuntu

Last October I packaged some free fonts for Ubuntu and made them available from my PPA on Launchpad. More recently, I have received some emails asking if I am going to update the package for Ubuntu Hardy Heron. As it happens, last month Martin F. Krafft kindly offered to help out with the package and sponsor its upload to Debian.

With Martin's guidance I have worked on the package and fixed numerous issues; though unfortunately, we have now hit a stumbling block regarding the package/fonts license. As a result of this, I am currently unsure if the package will pass Debian's strict quality control and make it into the repositories.

Still, as a result of this work, the package has been updated and is now available for Hardy.

Examples

The package itself contains a collection of over 400 fonts. The fonts were created by Brian Kent, who kindly agreed to let me package them for Ubuntu. There are numerous different types of fonts in the collection, see some examples below:

Installing the fonts

You can grab the package directly from my PPA, or follow the instructions below to install:

1. Open your apt sources.list file for editing with the following terminal command:

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

2. Add the following line to the bottom of the file:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/corenominal/ubuntu hardy main

3. Close gedit and issue the following terminal command to update apt:

sudo apt-get update

4. Still in the terminal, enter the following command to install the package:

sudo apt-get install ttf-aenigma

5. Enjoy your new fonts!

Note: You can also browse and download Brian's fonts directly from his website.

License

See debian/copyright for details. Needless to say, the fonts are completely free and you are free to distribute the fonts further, create new fonts based on these fonts and make changes to the fonts — provided those changes are noted and the original fonts are still attributed to the original author.

I'm somewhat of a stickler for usability, so here are reworked instructions for adding your PPA.

    1. Go to System - Administration - Software Sources, and click on the Third-Party Software tab.

    2. Click 'Add', and paste this line in: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/corenominal/ubuntu hardy main

    3. Click 'Add Source', 'Reload', and 'Close'.

    4. Click here (click) to install the package.

    5. Enjoy your new fonts!

Being a stickler is cool by me, thanks Vadim :) Having said that, the original instructions should work regardless of whether you are using a vanilla Ubuntu install, or not ;)

I hope the licencing issues work out, it would be great to have those fonts in Debian.

I had no problem following the instructions and installing these fonts. I even rebooted so my X server should see these fonts. But 'xlsfonts|grep' for 'emboss' & 'techniq' doesn't show them. What did I miss? No luck with 'xterm -fn', either, of course. What did I miss? Thanks.

@Roland: I am not sure you missed anything, maybe I did? I will look into it, thanks.

I was updating and adding to post on my blog and found this post of yours. I was going to add a link to this page. I got and error going here: http://ppa.launchpad.net/corenominal/ubuntu/pool/main/t/ttf-aenigma/ttf-aenigma_0.0.20080510-6_all.deb Then got this error trying Vadim P's suggestion… E: Malformed line 56 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist parse) E: Unable to lock the list directory

Thought you would want to know.

@VitalBodies: I have updated the package since writing this blog post and I forgot to update the direct link to the new package. Thanks for the bump :) I will fix the link.

Very exciting that there is an easy way to install a large number of wild and amazing fonts! VitalBodies downloaded the DEB file (from crunchbang's PPA) and chose to use the the Gdebi Package Installer which automatically installed the fonts. Could not have been easier. The fonts loaded and all that was required to see them in Inkscape was to reboot. We could not find them with Fonty Python until we looked in /usr/share/fonts/truetype/aenigma.

Even then only 10 show up…

…Unless you press the forward button. At that point one notices they show up ten at a time and that they seem to all be there. Must be one of drawbacks of have a really wide screen is to not notice that button. : )

The font thing in Ubuntu is a bit challenging and your package is VERY helpful. VitalBodies wants to thank you, your helper and the artist…

I hope you found out by now that I managed to make the fonts part of the upcoming Debian lenny! http://packages.qa.debian.org/t/ttf-aenigma.html

Thanks for your work and Patience, Phil!

@martin: I switched from using Ubuntu to Debian Lenny about a month ago. Since then I have come across the package a few times while performing apt-cache searches :) Great stuff. Thank you again for all your help with putting the package together and for helping it pass quality control.

Thanks for the pack man. Remember everyone, you can install this .deb on the new Intrepid 8.10 and 64-bit too. Simply replace "hardy" with "intrepid" in the instructions posted above.

Oh.. and if there is a problem try searching for another ttf-aenigma deb. http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/t/ttf-aenigma/
