Linux Journal - KDE or GNOME or?

Yes, it's the age old question — what is your preferred desktop manager? This time we ask you to not only cast your vote but to follow-up with a comment below. We'd like to know if you've switched your "favorite" in the last year or two and why. Did you use to be a KDE fan but recently switched to GNOME? Or perhaps you're exploring with something less mainstream (so to speak) and are loving it. Inquiring minds want to know…

I've cast my vote and posted the following comment:

I've switched from using GNOME to Openbox. I find that Openbox is faster and more hackable. Strictly speaking though, Openbox is a Window Manager as opposed to a Desktop Manager — therefore it requires some additional applications to provide the same functionality as a Desktop solution. Either way, I prefer it over GNOME and I can't see me moving back any time soon.

I could have written more, but I'm not sure that a comment form is best place to off-load. Anyhow, it'll be interesting to see which is the most popular "Window Manager" :)

I used Kde when I discovered Linux, since it was the default desktop manager on the distro I tried. But I soon discovered Gnome and fell in love. It's minimalistic approach seduced me. That said, I find it a bit heavy (long to load, lot of memory footprint). Last year, I started trying others managers : XFCE (too close to Gnome and less and less lightweight), Fluxbox, OpenBox… I have a small preference for OpenBox. It's really fast, but I'm missing some of Gnome features. I guess you can't have everything…

I agree both KDE and Gnome and even XFCE are too heavy for my taste. I prefer using window managers with low memory footprints. I have tried many window managers, and currently using one named "Karmen" which is really basic (no config) but looks good and goes well with the wbar launcher. It uses about 1 meg of ram. I'm always trying out new window managers and apps so my desktop never stays the same :)

I switched from Xfce to Blackbox and now to Openbox. I'm a minimalist at heart and want an efficient, lean window manager for my Linux system. Given the hardware I'm currently running, this will be my wm of choice for this machine. I'd try another wm on a more powerful machine when I get one, but the need to keep it light, efficent and lean would still be there :)
