Brainstorming on the Ubuntu Brainstorm

Tonight I have mainly been browsing the new Ubuntu Brainstorm site. Congratulations to everyone involved in putting the site/service together, it's a great concept and hopefully it'll prove to be a valuable resource for the Ubuntu community.

It'll be interesting to see how the site develops over the coming months. I'm especially interested in how archiving of the ideas will work — how long each idea stays on the front page, and where they go once they've been actioned etc. I think the logistics of a service like this will be key in ensuring it succeeds, for both users and developers.

Regarding actual usage, I've submitted my own idea and found the submission form to be straightforward enough. It would have been good to see a better system for categorising ideas, the single "Category" menu was quite limited and didn't provide for selecting multiple categories. Apart from that, I have no complaints.

Anyhow, I'll finish this post with my idea, remember to vote it up if you think it's a goer!

GUI for easy remastering

As I understand it, many users have multiple systems on which they run Ubuntu. Due to the nature of Ubuntu/Linux and the way in which it is easily customisable, I think it would be a good idea to create a GUI application to easily remaster Ubuntu with user specific customisations.

An easy to use application designed to achieve this would save users, like myself, from having to customise each installation individually. The customisations could be made once, burned to disc and then installed on any number of machines. This would save users a huge amount of time and could also benefit organisations wanting to install their own customised version of Ubuntu.

Note: scripts [such as remastersys] already exist and they will help to achieve this; however, they can be quite buggy and require the user to have a good understanding of the scripting language and the inner workings of Ubuntu. I wouldn't consider them very user friendly.

Update: Just seconds after submitting my idea it was voted down to -1. Hmm, maybe I should have waited until all the Digg/Wired traffic had passed?! Either that, or it's just a terrible idea :|

I fail to see why your idea was at -2 (before my vote). It will be also very good for remastering Ubuntu for special localization versions.

@Stemp: Thanks, personally I think it's a good idea, but then I'm biased :) Also, having spent some time on the site tonight, I think it's suffering from Digg traffic. There seems to be quite a few puerile ideas submitted, it's a shame but hopefully it'll calm down soon.

    Hello,

I think your idea isn't bad, It's just not as important for the average user as dualhead support, driver support, ease of use, suspend/resume, etc.

For me the arrows in brianstorm don't represent good/bad, more important/unimportant

@Tobias: A fair point, although defining the "average" user is a little tricky, is it not? Also, is the brainstorming site just about promoting ideas for the average desktop user? Plus, I tend to think of an idea being "good" if I deem it to be important. And finally, IMHO some of the ideas submitted over the last 24 hours really are "bad", to quote one such example:

    CHANGE UBUNTUS NAME
Written by ******** the 29 Feb 08. Category: Others. New
    CHANGE IT TO UVUNTU

    IT SOUNDS COOL

    And another:

    ADD WINDOWS SUPPORT
Written by ******** the 29 Feb 08. Category: Look and Feel. New
I WANT TO USE WINDOWS IN UBUNTU

    MAKE IT HAPPEN KIDS

The above ideas originated from the same troll. I can honestly say I think they are "bad" ideas.

    Peace :)

Don't worry, all good ideas get downvoted ;)

In fact, I'm not sure whether Digg traffic is really good for this site, as the Digg community can be quite an annoying one…

On the other hand, I submitted an idea of mine really early on (I believe it was #12) and it lingered on the front page quite a while :)

Right, defining average is tricky because noone wants to be average ;)

I'll only "green" ideas which are directly useful for me. Your idea certainly isn't bad, but I've never remastered ubuntu, and if I wanted to, I'd take the the time to hassle with the CLI commands and stuff, because I won't do this every day. Your needs may be (probably are) different. From my point of view Ubuntu devs should concentrate on Suspend, Laptop use in general and keeping ubuntu simple but easy.

I am a bit disappointed of Brainstorm, sure it's fun and exciting but:

    • SPAM (okay, at least the "More Porn in Ubuntu by default" idea was funny)
    • Seeking Support instead submitting ideas
    • Users seem to have little knowledge what Ubuntu is capable of, many ideas are already implemented
    • New ideas have no chance against the Top ideas by now

I don't want to put Brainstorm down, I'm just a bit sceptical.

always good ideas…………. not too boring ??

@Vincent: Shh, don't say that too loudly, I hear they can get riled quite easily ;) Seriously though, I know what you mean — Digg is not really known as a provider of high quality traffic.

@Tobias: I think your scepticism is well founded, although by all accounts the site has had a pretty rough debut. Hopefully the developers will continue to fix any bugs and improve the site.

& i really think that your idea can help windows-user to discover ubuntu more friendly way. & of course, who don't agree with a better way to transport ubuntu configuration through machines??
