Windows XP, Ubuntu, GParted & Super Grub Disk

Yesterday I permanently shut down the old family desktop. I say family, but in reality it was the desktop used by Becky and Emma before they got their laptops. Anyhow, before shutting the desktop down for the last time, Becky asked if I would transfer her music and photo collection to her laptop.

Becky's laptop is one of my old machines, it's an Acer Travelmate 240. I used it for a good few years before handing it over to Becky sometime last year. Being one of my old machines, it was set-up for dual booting with Ubuntu and Windows XP. Unfortunately I've yet to persuade Becky to migrate to Linux, so she always boots the system into Windows XP.

Anyway, before attempting to move Becky's data I performed a quick check on her system. Turns out that I'd partitioned her 30GB drive in favour of Ubuntu, no surprise there, and Windows XP had less than 2GB of free space to play with. I asked Becky what she would like me to do, her reply, "You can remove that second-rate operating system, I don't want your linucks shite on my laptop" — or something along those lines.

Not wanting to take her bait, and not being a Linux zealot, I agreed. So, I inserted my CrunchBang Linux CD and booted the machine. I then ran GParted and removed Ubuntu's swap and ext3 partitions, before resizing the fat32 partition to use the whole drive [GParted is a fantastic tool!] Once I'd finished adjusting the partitions, I attempted a reboot, only to be presented with a GRUB error. I forgot that this would happen, GRUB couldn't find its configuration file as I'd removed it when I edited the disk partitions.

To fix Becky's now useless system, I inserted my copy of the Super Grub Disk and within a couple of minutes I'd managed to restore the MBR and configure the system so that it would boot directly into Windows XP. I then transferred Becky's data and decommissioned the old family desktop. Easy.

Why does she think Ubuntu is a second-rate operating system? Is there something she does that Ubuntu isn't capable of? My experience has been that the only time someone can name something that can't be done in Linux is when they're stuck with a specific windows application and can't/won't use wine or visualization.

@Asa: To be fair, it was said in jest :) Seriously though, it'd be good if people would try to convince her that she should at least give it a try, and the reasons why. Be advised, whilst Becky isn't easily offended, she does read my blog :)

I had to do this exact same thing for my father's PC. He gave Ubuntu a try over a year ago, I will see if he is ready to try again with 8.04 LTS.

I get this from my family all the time. It is because people are stuck in their ways and it is more inconvenient to try another way of doing things and adapting to that way which is understandable.

Where I have triumphed is my girlfriend does admit Linux is safer and generally more stable and less problematic than Windows although does not have the time/patience/want/need to try Linux.

I would highly recommend that Becky does try Linux if she is prepared to take the time and have the patience to see the differences and see the way Linux works. I hope that she takes the time to take a look at one of your Ubuntu/CrunchBang installs and try it out even if she does not stick with it.

Good luck to both you trying to get her to try it and to Becky if she does try it.

Whilst I appreciate Philip's love of everything that is Ubuntu/Linux/Open Source etc, for me it is familiarity that breeds contempt, and keeps me using Windows :)

In my day job, I am a slave to a Windows machine, and I don't like to let go of my comfort blanket when I'm at home. Plus I know how much it winds Philip up!

I promise as my wedding present to him, that I will let him put his Crunchbang distro thingy on my machine when we return from getting hitched, and he can permanently remove Windows. (A guaranteed bribe to make him pull his finger out and march me down the aisle!)

    Hey there,

While I know none of the posters around, I wanted to pitch in with my experience:

My wife (girlfriend not so long ago) has switched over to Ubuntu on her laptop. And no, it wasn't as a wedding present :) For her the main reason to switch over was double-fold: - She got infected twice in less than 3 weeks with very annoying spyware, one of those emails that sometimes make it through spam filters pretending to be ecards. That was the tipping point. - She had been using Ubuntu off and on because of her strong principles. After a long time hearing me explain the downright dirty moves of Microsoft to hamper any attempt by developing countries to choose open source and become more self reliant, she was actually very ready to ditch Windows and stop supporting a company of these moral standards. I think this has helped to make her stick to Ubuntu until she got used to it.

Ubuntu is just the distro I use, though. Any other distro would have made me equally happy.

    Good luck!

Hello crunchbag owner and others too.

What I often say to the one who doesn't want to try a little bit another thing that Windows buggy is : Only smart people try to improve their "today" and give a try to new. People under Windows know why they can't do things, it's Windows… People with GNU/Linux do things coz they try to.

Just stop the 'friends and family tech support' for Windows software. If you want my help, use what I suggest! =)

It worked with my girlfriend's brother.
