The Death of a Desktop

Yesterday my aging desktop system finally wrote its last byte before giving up the ghost. In its early years it was a good system and it performed its duties with speed. In its later years it still performed its duties with speed, but occasionally fell over and crashed. Yesterday it crashed for the last time.

After making the painful decision not to attempt to revive the system, Becky and I went looking for a replacement. We found and rescued an abandoned Compaq Evo at a local rescue center for unwanted PCs. It's a nice quiet system[it's so silent that I have to keep checking on it to make sure it's alive] and it sits happily on my old yew table. As soon as I got it home I installed Ubuntu to keep it company.

Compaq Evos have served us well where I work. I've just collected a few to put Linux on for a donation to a school that can use them. Did you experience any problems getting things running on it?

@Sean: Not at all, in fact the install was one of the easiest I've experienced; the hardware needed no restricted drivers at all. The only thing I had to do was turn off Compiz, I'm not a fan :)

It's a little over 2 weeks since I got my Evo and I'm beginning to think it's one of the best systems I've owned. I can't express how nice it is to have a near-silent system. Also, swapping hardware, drives and memory for example, is also a breeze; the case is really well designed and accessing the internals is really quick. The only problem I encountered is a lack of room for a second hard drive, apart from that I'm really happy with my Evo.

BTW, good work! Any school that receives a donated Linux powered Evo should count themselves lucky.
