Ubuntu Web Banners

Here is my first batch of Ubuntu advocacy banners. I've got more in various formats/stages of production and I'll post them as and when I complete the sets.

I enjoyed making these — playing with GIMP provides a nice break from coding. Anyhow, this first batch contains two sets of standard 468x60px banners. Each image is supposed to encourage the viewer to explore the possibilities of Ubuntu by advertising one of Ubuntu's default applications.

I'd love to know what you think of these so please feel free to leave a comment with ideas for improvements etc.

    Pidgin and not Pidgen

I'd also use a transparent background instead of white.

Nice idea, I really like them overall. However, as it stands, I couldn't bear to put them anywhere with the strips. Maybe its just me, but they just don't complement the rest of the banners well.

    Pidgen ? Pidgin ;)

Pidgin. Doh! Thanks for spotting that :)

I think they look too busy, perhaps it would be better to change the border to a solid color instead. The positioning of the second set is much better, but then again the busy background. If you could replace that with a soft background, they will be great. Also try experimenting a bit with the font. The font is great for the ubuntu logo, but it looks a bit too much like 'Comic Sans MS' for text and sentences.

Fair point, they're pretty busy :) In defence; these are not supposed to represent a piece of art, but draw attention. It's surprising that the most garish banners are often the most effective.

Also try experimenting a bit with the font

Would this not make the images appear even more busy?!

Good job. I really like them! Under which licence are the sets released?

  8. Philip wrote,

@WebKid: I'm pleased you like them :) No official license as yet so I guess they are public domain. Feel free to use them, modify and distribute. As far as I know [ignorance is bliss!] only the Firefox logo has any trademark issues. Other than that I've received no complaints [yet] about using the application logos.

Also, I've made some more which I'll post soon. The new sets use the same dimensions and basic idea but have been modified as per Dave's comments above. Never let it be said that I don't listen to constructive criticism! :D
