Deskbar Applet & Tracker on Ubuntu

I've been using the Gutsy Gibbon on my desktop for just over a week now. I pretty much settled into using it straight after the upgrade fresh install from Feisty. So far I've experienced no real problems with it whatsoever.

During the past week I've managed to have a play with most of Ubuntu's new features. The one that has really stood out and impressed me the most has been the integrated desktop search provided by Deskbar Applet and Tracker.

Desktop search has evaded me for a while now. I've tried Beagle before but I wasn't overly keen on it, I much prefer Tracker. It's faster, more elegant and less intrusive. Also, it doesn't seem to grind on my hard drive — Beagle made my drives sound like they were shredding themselves when it was indexing my data.

Anyhow, I've been using the Deskbar Applet and Tracker Search tools more and more over the last few days. I have to say, they work really well together and I'm beginning to wonder how I managed without them. The only feature that I can think of that would make them better would be an integrated "Find & Replace" tool.

It's too bad Deskbar is a Gnome Panel Applet and not just a tray icon or something, so I can't run it in Xubuntu (well, I can, using the Xubuntu panel plugin xfapplet, but that's far from ideal), because I think I'd love it. I wouldn't mind Tracker to be included by default in Hardy though :)

    Hi,

when I set a Tag to an item, and after I search with the Tag term, Tracker show me the item correctly. Then I decide to remove the Tag from the item. At this point I have a problem: if I still search with the Tag term, Tracker show me the same result. The item (now without the Tag) is always listed in the search result. It seems like Tracker don't really remove the Tag, even though I have deleted it.

I'm not sure if this is a problem only on my PC (new Gutsy installation), or for everybody, so I ask you if you have already used Tag functionality, and noticed the same issue.

    Many Thanks

@Nick: Hi, I can confirm that this can be replicated on my system. To test this I:

    • Performed a search for "fubar" and made note of the results
    • tagged an item with that didn't appear in the results with "fubar"
    • queried "fubar" again, the newly tagged item appeared
    • removed the "fubar" tag from the item
    • queried "fubar" again, the untagged item still appeared in the results

I'm not sure but this could be a bug. I'm going to give it a while and try the query again. Maybe the index needs time to update?

@Philip: Hi, your hypothesis that the index needs time to update can be the correct one. In fact after some days my query don't display the former tagged items anymore. I think that Tracker needs a "quiet" PC for a while to work. In the past days I have turned on and off my PC many times, and perhaps Tracker don't had the time to update.

    best regards Nick
