Installing Fonts on Ubuntu

My previous post "465 Free Fonts for Ubuntu" has been well received [thanks Diggers!] It has also prompted some discussion about installing fonts on Ubuntu. To quote one Digg commentator:

It seems kind of ridiculous that one would have to gain root access and edit /etc/apt/sources.list just to install some fonts (or any software, for that matter).

Well, this is not always the case. You only need root privileges if you're installing your fonts to the "/usr/share/fonts" directory — as my package does. Fonts placed in this directory are available to all users on the system.

If you're not bothered about sharing your fonts [you maybe the only user of your system] then you can create a directory named ".fonts" under your home directory. Any fonts placed within that directory will then be automatically available for use.
